DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR,1797,

1797,

November,

19, Thin clouds & some sunshine, not very cold.
I went to J.Taylor's, he has a bad cold- I dined there- Granny Gaines there- Nancy not come from Races. [SUNDAY]

20, Cloudy morn, Snow and hail afternoon & night.
I went to Sale at Elias Langham's by Wm.Pollock,Sheriff.
Bought a bay Colt of this year's foaling for £6.1.0/- and a Calf for two dollars- for them am to pay at Court.
Wheat sold at 5/- p/r Bus., Corn 12/- to 12/9 p/r barrel.

21, Small or fine rain & ice on the trees &c. dark day.
I sent for the Colt & Calf- I bought yesterday, but did not get them.
J.Taylor sent and I went there to dinner & staid till super, had a dark walk returning.
Edm'd Taylor & wife, Granny Gaines &c at J.Taylor's.

22, Small rain continues, near as yesterday, last night & to day.
Sent for & got home the Colt & Calf.
J.Taylor, J.Taylor jr., Edm'd Taylor, C.Taylor & C.P.Howard dined here.

23, Heavy rains last night and to day till 8 or 9 o'clock at night.
I was at home.
Had Corn removed, 20th[Hnd]

24, Cleared last night, sharp frost, Fair day, cool.
I walked in evening to C.Taylor's.
Edm'd Taylor & wife there & the family.
C.Taylor to send for 2 Sows & 12 pigs tomorrow.

25, Sharp frost- Some clouds in morn, fair afternoon, milder.
Geo.Leathers with Cart got 2 Sows & 12 pigs for C.Taylor for which I am to have 5 Bar'ls Corn.
2 pigs weighed 10 1/2 & 12 1/2 lb.
Thes Bell sent for a Pot Hogs Lard- I sent one 39 lb gross.
I killed a Beef- M.Biggers had 1/2 weighing 103 1/2 lb.
I went to Mrs Burnleys after dinner.
She said she wou'd Cut out Coats for my Negroes next week.

26, Sunday, Sharp frost- Fair cold day.
I went to sermon at Court house, but few present- I gave Mr.O'Neil and Maj'r Moore certificates from Vestry book &c.
Frank got his tooth drawn by C.Taylor.
I came home to dinner.

27, Cold, some thin clouds & sunshine. I sent Frank to Mrs Burnley's to get a4 Coats & 5 pr Breeches out for my people- Sent 10 yds Blue cloth & a peice of White cotton-also 4/6 to pay for Cutting- Frank left the things-to go for them here after.
Reuben Taylor called here, I went with him to Court, Tho's Bell paid me a half Joe & 3 dollars-I lent him them to Reu Taylor to send to Richmond for books for boys.
I paid Wm.Pollock jr.,£6.13.0 for the Colt and Calf I purchased at Elias Langham's the 20th instant.

28, Sharp frost, Cloudy morn, fair evening & milder.
I rode to Court & returned in evening.
Frank brought from Mrs Burnley's, the Cloth &c Cut out.
Edmund Taylor & wife left my bro'r James's to go to Frederick.

29, Sharp frost, Clouds & cool-Sunny evening.
Abs'm Bradley missed his road & breakfasted here &c.
Had 32 Hogs killed- Roger Bell was over & assisted- Let Macon Biggers have 5 Hogs,500 lb Nt Pork, provision for next year- I kept 26, Nt.
3,031 lb for myself, and salted part of them, the rest to be done tomorrow.
Killed a Shoat was with the Hogs.
Reu Taylor called here & went to Court.

30, Thursday, Sharp frost, fair moderate day.
Had the balance of my Pork cut up and salted. Had the cut lard refined.
C.Taylor sent the Pot home, he had lard in some time ago.
The boy said G.C.Taylor was there- I went over to dinner.
J.Taylor & daughter, Nancy, G.C.Taylor and the family there, J.Taylor jr after dinner.
I brought home some Pamphlets of G.C.Taylor's, lent.
The latter part of this month Cold, and wet.
