DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1789,
1789,
January,
28, G.C.T. came home to breakfast and returned to uncle Taylor's to go with Robert Taylor to Col Madison's. Snowed very fast, but eh ground being wet, it did not lie- rainy evening- Hung up the meat, to smoke, of 14 Hogs- Got keg of Oysters & Ream Brown paper brought from Capt Woods last evening, sent a few Oysters to J. & C.Taylor's.
29, Cloudy and a few drops rain in the day & some in the night-
30, J.Taylor jr came here after breakfast and said his father was gone to Uncle Taylor. G.Taylor & self went to Uncle Taylors- Capt Burnley & family, J.Taylor & family, C.Taylor & Eliz Chew dined there- Began to snow about noon, a moist fine snow and continued all day. Frank asked leave to have Miss M.Conway's Pat for a wife. I did not object, as he said he had the necessary consent & that tomorrow night is to be their wedding.
31, Snowed till day and was about ten inches deep- Cleared about 10 or 11 o'clock- G.C.Taylor returned from Col.Madison's- Geo Porter & J.Taylor jr came here and dined- G.C.T. went with them to J.Taylor's- Weather changed to cold-

1, [Sunday] Very cold last night and to-day, though quite clear, can perceive no thaw- G.C.T. came home to breakfast & returned after & went to G.Taylor & came back at night-
2, Went with my father & G.C.T. to Election for Delegate to Congress from this District. In Orange Col.Madison got 200 votes & Monroe 9. I dined at Wood's and went to Uncle Taylor's from thence. Mr.Uriel Mallory & son, William, John Gibson H,Taylor, John & Robert Taylor & Hardin Burnley there-
3, About noon went to Court house. Madison got 16 votes to-day- Hear he had 256 to 103 in Culpeper, 174 to 105 in Albermarle. Capt Conway & G.Taylor came home with us, the former staid. The weather was very cold yesterday, more mild to-day. quite clear. 4 hogs killed- 2 left for M.Perry.
4, Uncle Taylor, John Taylor, J.Taylor & son, C.Taylor and Capt Conway dined here. Capt Conway went home after dinner. John Taylor staid all night.
5, John Taylor went to his fathers after breakfast. Weather clear and moderate. Capt Burnley came here & dined, said he heard Monroe had in the Spots'a Election, 74 votes more than Madison- C.Taylor went to Reu Taylor's to see sick negroes, called on his return & said Hub'd Taylor & his wife got home to-day- Moses went to work at G.Taylor's.
6, My father rode to Court house & heard that Col Madison got a majority of 104 votes in Louisa and a majority the first day in Goochland- Had a cow killed which weighed ab't 60 pr Quarter. Issued a licence to Kenneth Sutherland & Ruth Webster- Daniel Webster security- they had been to J.Taylor's, who set off to-day with ColPendleton to Charlottsville, where the Sh'fs are to meet to-morrow to compare the votes for member of Congress from this District-
9, Fine morning- Wheat new ____ Bushels bro't from Quarter Saturday and to-day. Sent 3 Bus' pr George to Mill & sent a bottle of brandy to Miller- The Mill was dressing and did not grind- George got drunk & fell- Frank went and brought him home. J.Taylor sent for us about noon- we went and dined. ColPendleton there from Sheriff's meeting said Col.Madison had 336 votes more than Monroe- G.T. and F.T. returned after dinner. G.C.T. staid- T.Barbour's wife got there from Culpeper- Thawed a good deal to-day-
10, G.C.Taylor came home after breakfast- George went to Mill & brought home flour- 3 bus Wheat made 70 lb. Mild weather, thaw continues.
7, I rode to Court house- Several Neighbors there. Snow about half gone- bad riding- Hubbard Taylor came by with me. Reuben Taylor was there and they dined here. Reuben Taylor has a bad cold- H.Taylor said another of his negro children died this morning of Whoop'g cough making the fourth since the year began.
8, Snowed in morning one or two inches deep, misty in the evening and like fog. [Note- the error of the two days misplaced was copying by PFT]
