DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1790,
1790, February,
1, Rainy morning, did not send to school. Capt Burnley dined here. C.Taylor came over to see sick negroes, got here while we were at dinner, he dined & returned immediately after. I went & got some smoking tobacco from John Leather's pen which he had thrown away. Hung for Bacon last four hogs killed.
2. Cloudy morning and a little rain. Sent the boys to school. Some snow but did not show on the earth. Cloudy all day. Put in Soak the Persimmon leaves, in Cask borrowed yesterday of J.Taylor. Ch's Dickenson got 32 lb Wool. One Lunsden was with him, dined here & went from here after dinner to A Porter's
3, Cloudy with a little rain & snow------' -mbs, 2 of them dead. ------ain & Sleet last night 2 inches deep ------y morning, cleared about noon & clouded -------d night with a little hail, rain & snow -----turned clear and very cold at night. -----ben Taylor was here and dined, sent for J.Taylor who came & being sent for to office returned before dinner. Miss S[arah] Madison married to Mr.T[homas] Macon of Hanover.
5, Cold morning after a very windy night, but clear good day-J.Taylor came by & said he hears corn has risen much in its price, he went to see M.Perry but ret'd & said he had bargained to let some person have it.
6, Very cold. G.Taylor rode to Court house, came by Maj'r Moore's where he dined and got some hops.
7, [SUNDAY] Froze hard last night, some clouds to-day but nothing fell- Reuben Taylor and George Taylor, of Ararat, walked here, also Ch Taylor, and dined.
8, The weather, which for four days has been the coldest we have had together this winter, changed warmer toward morning & thawed all day. Boiled Persimmon Beer & put up with hops and Yeast in a Cask borrowed of Capt Burnley-
9, Very cold weather. J.Taylor dined here. Some snow fell before day and cont'd a little all day.
10, Froze very hard last night- I went with G.Taylor to H Taylor's sale. H.T. came here at night, paid me 8/- he rec'd of P.Merry for something at his sale.
11, Continues very cold. C.Taylor came here to breakfast. J.Taylor came after breakfast but he and C.Taylor went away before dinner. Hub'd Taylor let my father have some bonds for the ballance of his acco't which they settled. After dinner he went away, said he should go to ColMadison's. Reuben Taylor and George Taylor, Ararat, called on their way to Capt Wood's, where there is to be a Ball to-night, it being Gen.Washington's birthnight.
12, Clear and cold I was very unwell last night-better this morning- G.Taylor went to Court house but did not dine there. Hub'd Taylor and Wm.Taylor, Merch't, came here from Ararat at night.
13, Continues very cold. Hub'd & W.Taylor, merch't, and my father went to Ararat where some lines of the land was to be run. F.Taliaferro, Capt Burnley & Reu Taylor were there. G.Taylor dined there. J.Taylor called here and went there- J.Taylor jr came and borrowed my scales & was going to Herndon's Mill w'th T.Barbour & Bowie Pendleton. H'd Taylor left some Int Warrants to pay Sheriff-
14, Some hail and rain before day & in the morning- The weather something warmer.
15, [MONDAY] Weather changed to a thaw, there was some rain before day and cloudy in morning- the boys went to school. Jos Bohannon was here with an account of his having had his corn burnt &c. G.Taylor gave him some money- Rain in evening My father sent to Reuben Taylor's- G.C.Taylor's Eliza & her children in the Cart. G.C.Taylor ret'd from Caroline where he went before Xmas.
16, Thaw, most of snow & ice dissolved- Frogs cry- I walked to School house, saw Capt Burnley there. Ten scholars were there. G.C.Taylor went to C.Taylor's, when he returned brought a letter from Capt Rice inclosing a Cart's for 86,60/90 Dollars Final Settlement for the hire of W.Taylor's Carpenters at the Barracks, also 20 Dollars Indents instead of the interest from 1 April 1781 to 1, Ja'y 1785-Note-I had before got a Certificate on a claim for W.T. for the above all ------ in Orange Court.----------- for 16.0-------- At same time I received a letter from W.Taylor----Capt Rice dated 25, Jan'y 1788
