[145] 6 DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1790,
1790, March,
22, [Continued] from dispute in my right. I also gave a bond to Convey a moiety of 3,000 acres of Land Located by Kennedy to the said Kennedy whenever the said Land is properly secured to me- The old plant patch burnt and sown today.
23, Went with my father to Court to day. G.C.Taylor went to C.Taylor's. Hubbard Taylor gave me an obligation, that if any defect should be found in five years in the title of the Lands he located for me, he will pay me the proportion of the expences for the part lost agreeable to what he was to have of the land. Geo. Taylor sold Mozingo to Hub'd Taylor for £60. to be paid 1, April 1791, & for which sum he is to leave his own bond or get Mr.Wm.Taylor's of Fredericksburg. Geo. Taylor agreed to pay me ten pounds for Hub'd Taylor & H.Taylor paid me 16/- which (except £4.8.4 1/2 which he had some time ago of me for Land expences & which he is hereafter to account for) ballanced the acco't for the Warrant I let him have. H.Taylor came here from Court- the £10. my father agreed to pay for him, was the sum he subscribed for the relief of *Phil.Taylor. *[Philip W.Taylor was among the most indefatigable & useful of the early preachers (Methodist) --In 1786 he came to Kentucky; while descending the Ohio River he was fired on by Indians & he had one arm shattered by a ball; his wound confined him for six months at the Falls of the Ohio- In 1788 he married Miss Elizabeth Poor and a short time afterwards they were both converted and joined the M.E.Church--Hr settled in Jessamine County Kentucky---He died Feb'y 1856, aged 91, at the residence of his son-in-law, John Wright. --Method-1sm in Kentucky, Kavenaug.--PFT]
24, There was some thunder, Lightning & rain last night & foggy this morning. Reuben Taylor came here early & *Hubbard Taylortook leave of us and they went to Maj'r Moore's to Breakfast- I went with G.Taylor to Court, G.C.Taylor staid. Some rain in evening late- I sent Mr.Ingram's & got some young trees out of his Apple Orchard. J.Taylor jr here at night. [*Hubbard Taylor moved to Ky. Oct. 21, 1788. He returned to Va., in 1789 to settle up his business]
25, Last night was rainy- cloudy & fine rain in the day- C.Taylor came to see sick child & he & J.Taylor went away after breakfast. I planted two rows of Apple trees, the 3rd row from the Cherry, Leather Coat, the 4th, another kind from Ingram's.
26, Much rain last night, some to-day and very cloudy- Brothers James, Charles & Reuben and J.Taylor jr. dined here- Capt Burnley here in evening.
27, Cloudy morning & a little rain- G.C.Taylor went to Col.Madison's. I went in evening to J.Taylor's and returned.
28, [SUNDAY] Bro'rs James, Reuben & Charles dined here- Lent Reuben Taylor my horse to ride to Fredericksburg- Maj'r Moore also dined here. G.C.Taylor dined at Mr.Shepherd's & came bak in night. Bro'r Richard [Commodore-WKA-] sent Baldwin for his sons. a little Hail & rain in morning.
29, Cool morning- more mild afternoon. George & Alex'r Shepherd, Rob't Alcock jr. Boswell Thornton, J.Taylor jr., Capt Burnley Mr. *Richard & John Thomas, & Capt Th's Daniel dined here, the latter on his way to Kentucky. C.Taylor was here after dinner- Tay[ene]'r Jones came at night & took 2 Bags with 6 Bushels wheat to carry to Fred'g. Let him have a bottle and Brandy- Richard & Colby Taylor went to Caroline w'th Baldwin. I bought 2 lb. Cotton of Baldwin for 3/- [*Richard Thomas married Mildred Taylor, Aunt of diarist- John Thomas was his son--WKA]
30, Uncle & Aunt Thomas went to Culpeper in Bro'r James's chair which went for J.Pendleton's family, who met half way & came over at night- We went with Capt Tho's Daniel to Capt. Burnley's- James & Chas Taylor were there to dinner-smart frost and weather cool- Edm'd Taylor got here from Rich'd Taylor's- Rolled the Tobacco - 4 Hnds.
31, We ent with T.Daniel to Ch's Taylor's, Capt Conway, Capt Burnley, J.Taylor & son from Fred'g was at C.Taylor's & says a Duel was fought Last Saturday between Robert Richie & Wm.Glassell, when the former was killed on the spot- Reu Taylor bought me 2 yds Cloth for 16/- I sent 12/- down by him & settled 4/- w'th James Taylor in his small account. Mozingo set off down to his new master.
