2.[166] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1791, 1791,
January,
16, Rained a little in morning- weather still smoky and cloudy- Received a letter from Bro'r Richard informing me he had bought 28 gallons Wine of H.McAusland-Maj'r Madison's Jacob told me he had brought the Wine & left it at Maj'r Moore's- Jacob brought for my father a Scrubling Clamp & some brown sugar of bad quality- G.C.Taylor & Jas Bell came here in evening from J.Taylor's- Wet evening till bed time- [SUNDAY]
17, Cleared and fine morning- Went to J.Taylor's. His sons-in-law & families, Harry Pendleton & sister. Uncle & Aunt Taylor, Jenny Taylor, Miss Polly Barbour & J.Bell dined there- After dinner G.C.Taylor went to Capt Conway's on his way to Caroline.
18, Cold weather, not very severe- Sent the Cart to Maj'r Moore's, got wine & some lightwood bro't home. F.Moore jr came to know if he could get a negro woman he had spoke to G.C.Taylor about hiring last Tuesday. I told him Reuben Taylor would keep her this year, he replied that he had said would take her & it would disappoint him if he could not get one- tho' but a week passed since he spoke of hiring her.
19, Sent and got Capt Burnley's Wheat Fan, and cleaning Wheat at the Barn. Weather continues cool. a few clouds.
20, J.Taylor was here in morning, ret'd to breakfast- I went with my father to Chas Taylor's. Jas Taylor & son, John & Harry Pendleton, dined there. F.S.Taylor got here from Caroline-
21, Uncle Taylor & Aunt Taylor, Jenny Taylor, J.Taylor & family, Reu Taylor & do. Capt Burnley & wife, John Pendleton & family, Harry Pendleton & sister, Miss Throckmorton & Miss Fanny Moore, dined here. C.Taylor had company or he & family would have come. Broached Wine and used 3 quarts.
22, Bowyer sent a boy named Hughes for Sary, G.C.Taylor's wench, hired to him till the end of this year for £4. Sent her to him. C.Taylor was here in evening, having heard my father was unwell.
23, C.Taylor dined here, was sent for about 2 o'clock that Reu Taylor & family &c were at his house, he went immediately after dinner. My father a little better of his cold. [SUNDAY]
24, Went with my father to Court. A Holmes brought Great Coat- I let him have a pair of Breeches he made too small, for 15/- & paid him 8/- for making Great Coat- the making vest that and another pair Breeches balanced the 15/- I paid Jos Griffy 4/- in full, his account against G.Taylor for Waggoning- I rec'd 15/2 1/2 of Mr.James Newman for an order on T.Barbour for 16/10 1/2 Int Warrants which he had received- Capt C.Conway came home with us.
25, Capt Conway went home after breakfast- F.S. Taylor went to C.Taylor's. Rained a little before noon & a little in evening. Hung Jowls & Crowns of first killed hogs to smoak.
26, My father, F.S.Taylor & I went to J.Taylor's and dined- J.Pendleton & family, H.Pendleton & sister were there. Capt Burnley in evening- Reu Taylor called by J.Taylor's & left some Ginseng he brought from Hyde's for me, said he did not charge anything for it.
27, J.Taylor, John & H.Pendleton dined here, also Mr.Tho's Bell. He had been to J.Taylor's & left Mrs Bell & one of his daughters there.
28G.Taylor, F.S.Taylor & I dined at Uncle Taylor's- Cousin Jenny was gone with Miss Patsy Throckmorton to Hyde's on a visit. C.Taylor wrote a note for 2 Gall wine, but John returned before I got home.
29, I sent by John 2 Gallons wine to C.Taylor- Weather cold. Clear last night & morning- cloudy evening. Capt Burnley called here in evening and left invitation to H.Burnley's wed'g at Col.Burnley's next Monday.
30, F.S.Taylor went in evening to J.Taylor's
31, My father very unwell- Wm.Wallace got me to go with him to Office, he took two deeds from Spotswood to Wm.Chisham with---J.Taylor was gone to Wedding- C.Taylor came here in evening and brought some pills for my father to take at night, but, he being better in evening did not take them.
