3 [167] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1791,
1791 February,
1, Weather continues dry & cool- C.Taylor dined here to day.
2, I went to Maj'r Lees & bought 2 1/2 yds Cloth &c for F.S.Taylor & some articles for my own use. F.S.T. went in evening to J.Taylor's. 3, J.Taylor & J.Pendleton called here & I went with them to Capt Burnley's, this being the day he expected to get his land divided- Francis Taliaferro, Hay Taliaferro & Wm. Taylor Com'rs, R.C.Webb, Surveyor, John Leathers & son Moses, Chain men, Surveyed round part of tract, Col.Burnley, T.Bell, Maj'r Moore, J.Taylor jr & F.S.Taylor were in company- J.Taylor & son, J.Pendleton & F.S.T dined here- Several of the Company called & took some grog as we passed the gate. 4, Alex'r Shepherd sent & had 48 1/2 lb Tallow pr boy. We dined at J.Taylor's- J.Pendleton & family- C.Taylor's family & Miss M.Conway were there.
5, Cloudy and a little rain- Jas Taylor & son & J.Pendleton dined here. J.Taylor jr staid. 6, [SUNDAY] Pleasant weather, F.S.Taylor very unwell, complains of a palpitation- he went to C.Taylor's & got bled and returned. G.C.Taylor got home from Caroline. 7, C.Taylor came here in morning & returned after breakfast- F.S.Taylor took a vomit and was much better in Evening- J.Taylor jr came here at night. J.Pendleton & family went to Culpeper. 8, F.S.Taylor set off to Caroline- I had let him have £7.1.6 Cash- 2/1/2 yds Cloth & trimmings for a Coat bought at Lees 37/6 & 7 yds Linen 21/- for shirts. 9, Rainy with some hail & a little snow. Hung the Bacon killed, 13, January. 10, Clear and good weather, My father went to Uncle Taylor's to dinner. G.C.T. went to Maj'r Madison's &c. 11, James Taylor & Capt Burnley dined here- Capt Burnley agreed to let my father join him in a Plant patch, near the line. 12, I was sent and informed a man had fish to sell, at J.Taylor's, I went & bought 3 for 4/6- he had many fine ones, Rocks. Uncle Taylor & C.Taylor dined here- C.Taylor & I went to Capt Burnley's fields with him to hunt hares, but did not kill any- G.C.T. came home & J.Taylor jr came here in evening. 13, [SUNDAY] We dined at home, Except G.C.Taylor who went to Maj'r Lee's. 14, Went with my father to Court House, Where Mrs Millar (Dancing Mistress) began to teach but near she had only Mr.Shepherd's daughters. Came to Uncle Taylor's with G.Taylor, Maj'r Moore & Mrs Moore & young ladies- Capt Burnley & family, Mrs Hite &c dined there- J.Taylor jr went to Culpeper- 15, We went to J.Taylor's- Capt Conway & family, C.Taylor &do. Milly Glassell & Fanny Moore dined there. 16, Weather turned cold- Capt Conway & family, J.Taylor & do & C.Taylor & do & Uncle Taylor dined here- 17, Weather cold last night- Snowed in morning and very cold and windy. J.Taylor came here in evening & bought & pd 3/- for 1 yard Linen. 18, Continues cold- Killed a Stalled Cow- Macon Biggers had a fore quarter wt 77 lb The hind quarter weighed 75 lb. 19, Snowed last night- about 3 inches deep. thick mist and small rain to day. Rob't Taylor and Wm Madison dined here- 20, G.C.Taylor went to Reu Taylor's- my father & I dined at home. Hear that Js. Clark jr died of measles- [SUNDAY] 21, Snowed very fast till afternoon- Fell about 3 inches upon the old which had sunk about an inch-the whole about 4 or 5 inches deep. 22, My father rode to Court house, returned by Uncle Taylor's & dined there- 23, A little snow fell last night, cleared by morning- Bro'rs James & Charles dined here- thawed a good deal. 24, Snow thawed much to-day. South hill sides almost bare. 25, C.Taylor sent for us, we went over & dined. J.Taylor & Miss Nancy Bell was there. C.Taylor went to Wm.Taylor's in evening, he came for him to visit his wife who is unwell. fine weather.
