15[179] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1791, 1791,
August,
18, Rainy morning and continued all day- *Wm Taylor (Botetourt) here- [*Wm. Taylor of Botetour was son of Jonathan Taylor, brother of the Diarist who lived in Botetourt County and who moved to Ky., in July 1790.Wm.Taylor remained in Botetourt until 1796, them moved to Ky.-WKA] 19, G.C.Taylor went to Doct'r Walker's. My father, W.Taylor & I dined at J.Taylor's, the weather cool for the season- 20, We went to C.Taylor's and dined. Weather cool and cloudy, Heard Sally Bell died to day. 21, We went to Reuben Taylor's, J.Taylor jr with us. Maj'r Moore, Mrs Moore & Rob't Moore went there after dinner. We had plenty of Watermelons- Weather continues cool and cloudy. [SUNDAY] 22, Went to Court- Sent letters by Rich'd Cole to Colo J.Finney & G.C.Taylor & one from F.S.Taylor to his mother- I rec'd a letter from F.S.Taylor of Norfolk- he informs that he engaged to live with Col.[William] Lindsay in the Naval Office three years at £30. pr year. A little rain and cloudy. G.C.Taylor ret'd from Dr.Walker's 23, Very cloudy, dark and a good deal of rain. My father went to Court house & dined there- the rest of us with W.Taylor dined at home- Began to distill Brandy. 24, Foggy morning- William Taylor set out on his return to Botetourt. My father & I went to Rob't Taylor's. Col.E.Pendleton jr & family are there. Uncle Taylor was also there. 25, A little Shower in first part of last night. G.C.Taylor went to Doct'r Walker's to study with Mr.F.Walker. My father & I went to Uncle Taylor's- Col Pendleton & family & Rob't Taylor & do. were there. J.Taylor got 5 ps Bacon; 1 G. 1 S. & 3 Midlings=81 lb. 26, A little rain early last night- My father went to Court house where Col.Pendleton & others were to meet to go to Col.Burnley's, & ret'd at night. Syl who went yesterday with G.C.Taylor returned with the horses. 27, I walked out before breakfast, Moses Perry came here & went away before I returned- James Jackson came here in the evening to enquire if I could certify the time he served in my Company 2d V. Regiment- I referred him to Maj.Cowherd. [Evidently Capt Francis Cowherd, 2nd Va. Reg't-PFT] Warm growing weather several days past. 28, [SUNDAY] My father, the boys & I went to Church & heard a Sermon preached by the Rev'd Mr.McFarlan, there was about one hundred persons at Church. Mr.Proctor called and dined with us. 29, My father rode to the Overseers, who is distilling, & returned to dinner. I carried my Imported Cloth & trimmings to Doulins - Had my mare's shoes removed & ret'd todinner. Bror's James & Charles were here after dinner. 30, I went to Hyde's Stores & bought sundries to the amount of £1.15.9, which I paid for. About 2 o'clock a rain came up & I staid & dined at Hyde's. When I got home Mr.Willis Hord was there. He gave me a letter from Wm Taylor dated 25, July [Wm Taylor, bro. of the Diarist m. Lucy Hord 1786, and moved to Ky] 31, Brothers James & Charles came here & breakfasted . Mr.Hord went on to Fredericksburg-I went to Mr.Bell's to the funeral of his daughter, Sarah- My father, having a Whitlow, did not go. I returned to dinner-Warm weather for last ten days. September, 1, Uncle R.Taylor, Col.E.Pendleton jr, J.Taylor, H.Pendleton & J.Taylor jr, dined here- A plentiful moderate rain fell in afternoon- 2, Cloudy last night and this morning and a little cooler than of late. Cleared ab't 8 o'clock. I went with my father to J.Taylor's, Col.E.Pendleton & family, uncle Taylor & Rob't Taylor were there. 3, Began to rain early this morning and continued to rain moderately all day. 4, [SUNDAY] I believe it rained all last night and very fast this morning, ceased about 11 o'clock and a fine evening- 5, Clouded and rained last night. Foggy morning but a good warm day. I carried some buttons & silk to Dowlin for my clothes. I bought Maj'r Lee a remnant Blue cloth to make Saddle cloth for 15/- & ret'd to dinner. Heavy rain evening.
