DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR,1797, 14 [31] 1797, June, 21, Pleasant, fair. I walked to Court house- Rec'd 36/- of Wm Stewart for wool & butter- bo't 1/4 Tea & Cards of Jenkins- Came by Aunt Taylor's- Mrs Burnley & family,C.P.Howard & wife, there. Aunt Taylor gone to Maj'r Moore's. 22, Thursday, Cloudy morn, A little small rain in evening. Reuben Taylor walked here- I went with him to J.Taylor's where he looked for some Records. J.Taylor jr came while we were there, his wife at Maj'r Moore's- he returned after dinner. Dined at J.Taylor's- E Chew there. 23, Rained some last night, a good moderate rain before noon when it cleared. Had Cabbage plants set where pens grew & where Cabbages were set out last winter. About 1 o'clock went to cutting the common sort of Wheat near the Barn. I walked there after dinner. Jos Edwards was cutting- Returned by C.Taylor's,who told me a Negro of Col Barbour's has the small pox. Removed the 9th Hhd Corn into Old House. 24, Fair and dry weather Cutting Wheat in Barn field all day- I was there in evening W.Edwards came afterwards. I saw Reu Taylor at J.Taylor's & went there, he was searching Officee for courses &c- We came away before noon- I came home. J.Taylor gone to Springs. 25, Sunday, Fair warm and dry. J.Taylor & wife & some of children went to the Springs I walked to C.Taylor's and dined there, none but his own family there. 26, Warm, some clouds, but no rain here. Cut some Wheat in morn-afterwards cocked 25 I went to Court, Received no money- Mr Triplett continues to promise. I wrote to Col J.Taylor & Col E.Pendleton jr & gave the letters to Mr J.Blair. I bought sundry trifling articles of Pedlars. 27, Clouds & sunshine, very dry weather. I rode before breakfast to Mr.Shepherd's & paid James Blair $2.16.4 the balance in full due Mess'rs David & James Blair. Had a Shoat killed-Sent hind Q'r to M.Biggers, 10 lb. About Harvest. 28, Warm & dry-some scattering drops rain. - About Harvest. 29, Thursday, Continues dry and warm. About Harvest. After dinner I walked to C.Taylor's-carried Jeans for 2 vests- Some Cravats & Hand'fs to get hemmed. 30, Continues very dry. About Harvest. I was very unwell in night & this morn. Walked to Court House- Came by Aunt Taylor's with C.P.Howard, dined with him & wife Aunt Taylor came home in evening, from Mrs Burnley's. I bought and paid Jenkins for 3 yds Humhums[?] 2/6, and 1 oz thread 1/3. July, 1, Some thing clouds, smoky. About Harvest. I came with them to J.Taylor's & there 2 or 3 hours- Sister, Gibson, & Nat, J.Taylor & J.Pendleton left the Springs to day. 3, Some clouds in morn, fair noon- Clouds to South east in evening- some drops rain here. I rode to Mr Triplett's- was paid $45. to be placed against my old account- Bought on new 2 oz thread & 1 yard flannel. Called at Mr. Shepherd's on return between 12 & 1 o'clock and dined there- Mrs Buck there Finished cutting & Cocked the wheat in Barnfield- Cut the Oats. 4, Some clouds, very dry. I took dose salts and staid at home. Cocked the Oats which were mowed yesterday. 5, Fair morn, dry warm day, hazy at night. Getting early wheat to the Wheat yard. I staid at home. 6, Hazy morn, fair warm day. Removed the 10th Hhd Corn into old hosue. Continued brining Early Wheat. I went to Major Moore's to the Funeral of Mrs Moore. Mr Waddell preached the Sermon.Mr. O'Neill read the funeral service.A large audience. I went to C.Taylor's, Capt Conway & family where there- Hay Taliaferro' sr & wife & two Sisters came to C.Tayor's in the evening.
