DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR,177, 15 [332] 1797, July, 7, Began to rain about daylight very moderately.Cloudy day.Not much rain.Good shower at night.PlantedCabbages in square next the Gate. Mr.Shepherd,Thos'Bell C.Taylor & Ben Taylor sent and got cabbage plants. 8, Foggy morning. Fair evening. Finished getting my early Wheat together. 9, Fair, cool for the season. [SUNDAY], I went to C.Taylor's to dinner. Sally & Betsy Taylor got home from the Springs,where they went last Friday to a barbecue- I came by J.Taylor's, he & wife- T.Barbour's wife & the children came from Springs to-day- left there J.Pendleton and wife, Caty & Tommy. 10, Fair morning, some clouds in evening. My people plowing corn & hoeing do.*J.Taylor made signal and I went over. Maj'r Moore and myself dined there. Peggy Biggers do. Ben Winslow & Thos Coleman were at office. [*Raising a flag.PFT] 11, Fair dry weather. I met C.Taylor at the road by his bridge, gave him mem'o to get medicine &c at Fredericksburg wher he was going- I let him have 2 half Joes $4.16.0- I took dose Ipecac & Jallap. Got 2 Bags corn Ground at Dade's Mill. 12, Fair,dry,warm- Cloudy at night.J.Taylor & family went to Springs. I walked to Court house. returned to dinner. 13, There was a little sprinkle of rain early last night. Fair morn and day. Had 11th hhd Corn removed into old House. William Stewart sent a note by Daniel and got 16 lb Wool. Sent Frank with 3 Bushels old Wheat to Dade's Mill. Martin went with a Bag Corn & got ground. 3 Bus Wheat= About 87 fine flour;7 seconds; 16 shorts=110 lbs +41 lb bran = 151. 14, Very warm last night & to-day- Fair. I slept but little last night. I walked to Court house. Dined at Mr.Shepherd's. Mrs Alcock and Mrs Buck there. Finished plowing Corn over the 4th time since planted. 15, Warm- Very dry- Fair morn. clouds in even with rains distant, some here but did not run off the house. Wm Stewart sent Daniel & got 6 lb Butter. Reuben Taylor came here from Court house & dined. 16, Sunday- Hazy morn, A moderate shower in evening. I went to C.Taylor's. He returned the money I let him have the 11th- he told me he got some medecine for me. I dined at C.Taylor's- Sally Burnley there. 17, Monday, Cloudy & a little foggy. I sent some shirts &c to get wrist-bands & mended at C.Taylor's- C.Taylor sent me by Frank Sundry medecines amounting to 10/4 1/2. 18, Cool with clouds but no rain. I went to J.Taylor's to dinner. J.Pendleton and family, Miss Maria Lilly(from the Springs) Sally Burnley & Sister. C.Bell & E.Chew there. After dinner Mrs Burnley, Aunt Taylro and Mrs Howard was there. 19, Thin clouds-no rain, very dry. Began to cut Hay in Meadow. Last year cut the 22d, It is much drier now than then. I went to J.Taylor's after dinner- C.Taylor & family, C.P.Howard & C Bell dined here. 20, A few clouds in morn- fair afterwards. About Hay &c. J.Taylor, John Pendleton- Reuben Taylor, C.P.Howard & C Bell dined here. C.Taylor here in evening. J. Pendleton unwell. Killed a shoat from Guinea Sows. 21, Clear, dry weather. Mrs Gilding and daughter came here and breakfasted- I let her have a Bottle honey and Midling, 9 lb Bacon. gave her 1/4 of Shoat- and to have 2 1/2 Bus Corn ready for her tomorrow. I walked to Court house & returned to dinner. 22, Cloudy morning, drops rain- A rain to South about noon- Plentiful & moderate rain in evening. Stacked the Hay before noon. Sowed cabbage, Radish, Turnep & mountain cresses seed in Garden by Asparagus- Sowed Summer Turnep seed in the Watermelon patches by the yard & the others. 23, Sunday, Cloudy warm morning, fair evening. I went to sermon at Court house. Dined at J.Taylor's. Mrs Bell, Mrs Gambel, C Bell, J.Pendleton & family, Miss M.Lilly, Peggy Biggers & daughters there. 24, Warm, some clouds & a very little rain in evening. I went to Court. Ebntered Warrant for 100 acres land-Between Herndon's & Langham's lines on the lower side the road from Brick Church to * Gum Spring- sold J.Clark my Boot shoes for 7/6- Bo't sundries. G.C.Taylor's Tome began to work on Spring house.
