3 revisions | michellezitney at May 19, 2020 07:10 PM 18012[176] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1791, 1791, July, 9, G.C.T. went to Maj'r Madison's-but met him on the way and ret'd & dined at Mr.T.Bell's, his daughter Sally very ill- Heard Sawyer or Cherry Derry insect at night- 10, [SUNDAY] Cha's Taylor & Catlett Conway's son Frank was here and dined- I let C.Taylor have aguinea to buy me sundry medecines & other things, he intending to Fred'g in a day or two. 11, A little after dark last night fell a heavy and plentiful rain, but hear to day it did not extend wide- John Taylor came by and I went with him to Mr. William Taylor's to whom he offered £650. for his land- But W.Taylor asked £800.Cash. From thence we went to Reu Taylor's- his child is a little on the recovery- we proceeded to Maj'r Moore's and with C.Taylor dined there. Mr.D.Snodgrass (Schoolmaster) came here to board, Capt Burnley came with him to breakfast- the latter ret'd before noon- 12, G.C.Taylor went to Bledsoe's Meeting House, notice having been given that Mr.Todd would preach there to day. Issued a marriage Licence, James Barker & Sarah Maze, widow- A little sprinkle of rain at night. 13, Warm weather, some clouds but no rain. Hear there went heavy rain with hail to the Southward, yesterday- Jas Taylor was here in evening to get some Turlington- said his son Gibson was taken with coughing and vomiting- Capt Burnley also was here in evening- G.C.Taylor went to Albemarle Court to see Mr.Breckenridge- 14, Cool wind from South this morning- Hear that C.Taylor got home this morning from Fredericksburg- 15, My father very unwell- Sent for C.Taylor, who came over in the evening & says he is not well- G.Taylor settled with him for 281 lb Tob'o in C.Taylor's Hnd. which he sold at 14/- pr C'd. C.Taylor paid him the balance, after deducting the car'g down & inspection 6/4 & 18/- for 30 lb Sugar the 11th June last & 1/6 for Lemons- is 25/10. Tob'o came to 39/4 G.C.Taylor ret'd from Charlottesville, did not see Breckenridge, Jas Bell came with G.C.T. & staid till next day after breakfast- C.Taylor ret'd the Guinea I let him have the 10th. 16, G.Taylor still unwell, took some pills & mended in evening- J.Taylor came over in morning but soon returned- C.Taylor came over & brought me sundry medecine &c but wasent for & returned home before dinner- J.Taylor jr & H.Pendleton dined here. A very fine rain fell in the evening. 17, All our family including Mr.Snodgrass dined at C.Taylor's. He was sent for and went after dinner to see a patient at Martin Johnson's- The weather very cool for the season- On our return home we met Capt Conway going to C.Taylor's, he intends to his Mountain plantation tomorrow. [SUNDAY] 18, Cool and clear- Uncle Taylor, Maj'r Moore & Reuben Taylor dined here- After dinner, Maj'r Moore, R.Taylor and I went to Court house- A negro man of R.Taylor's & one of Abner Porter's having had a quarrel, their overseers sent them to the Court house to be tried by Mr.Shepherd, but he being absent, they were ordered to behave well and sent home. 19, I went to Hyde's store, bought sundries to amount of 13/- I p'd him 1/- & he had before rec'd 3 bus' Peas at 4/- which balanced- I returned to Dinner. James Bell dined here, J.Taylor, Maj'r Madison & W.Madison here in evening. 20, C.Taylor came here to breakfast- I went with him to M.Biggers to see a negro girl who had a rising on her thigh- Met Reu Taylor, who was looking for his boy Harry- C.Taylor went home- R.Taylor came by the house & proceeded home. Sowed Turneps by Sheep pen- Our sort in Flax-Aunt Battaile's in Tobacco ground 21, We went to J.Taylor's to dinner- John Taylor sent last night some letters he brought from Caroline. I had one from Rich'd Taylor and one from F.S.Taylor, who had left Goochland by consent of those who sent children to the School he taught at, and is to live in Maj'r Lindsay's office at Norfolk- Some thin clouds in evening and a few drops rain about 11 o'clock at night.
