3 revisions | michellezitney at May 19, 2020 08:17 PM 18113[177]DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1791, 1791, July, 22, Thin clouds this morning, a light mist in afterniin- John Taylor came here and paid me Twenty Dollars, sent by Mr.William Gilbert in part of Hugh Jones's debt of Eight Pounds, the remaining Two Pounds I allow Mr.Gilbert for his trouble in collecting the said debt. The above debt was for a horse of mine sold by James Taylor to Hugh Jones about Feb'y or March 1777 for £10. and which I agreed by letter to said Jones to take £8. for- Brothers James, Charles & Reuben dined here. James Barbour Shf. came in evening and staid till morning. 23, My father went after breakfast to William Taylor's & ret'd in less than two hours. Granted a marriage Licence to Thornton Fosishee to Nancy Graves- Do. Tho's Sampson & Winny Powell and next day gave J.Taylor Cr. for 5/- rec'd for them. Wm.Taylor of Botetourt, with a Mr.King (a young man intending for Ireland) came here in the evening. Very dry & warm- 24, J.Taylor breakfasted here. W.Taylor & Mr.King set off for Baltimore-George Taylor (Redplains) dined here- [SUNDAY] 25, Went to Court- Paid 10/- to Alex Holmes for making Jacket & Breeches- Paid a Pedlar for 6 yards Jeans 21/- Lent Capt C.Conway 15/- for Miss M.Conway- Capt Conway came home with us. 26, Rained a little last night- Cloudy & Showery all day tho' not much rain- Capt Conway dined with us & went home in evening. Capt Burnley here an hour or two in the evening- 27, I went to J.Taylor's but ret'd to breakfast, gave him a memo' to have my box of goods brought from F.Maury's in Fredericksburg. J.Taylor went down with Mess' T.Bell & A.Madison. Sowed Turnep seed in Wheat patch, some carrot & Parsnep seed along with Turnep seed. Sowed Buckwheat & finished 28th. 28, I went to Capt Burnley's- F.Taliaferro, H.Taliaferro & Wm Taylor, Com'rs met there to Divide the Land on part of which Capt Burnley lives, among G.Burnley, Barnes & Rich'd Cawthron & wife, two parts to G.B., one to Barnes and one to Cawthorn & wife, Maj'r Langhorn acted for the latter, having a power-of-Attorney for so doing. The Commiss'rs, Mr.Barnes, Langhorn, Col.Burnley, Maj'r Moore, R'd C.Webb, Surveyor, Mr Snodgrass, John Leathers, J.Taylor jr. Mrs. Hay Taliaferro, dined there and Reuben Taylor. 29, I went to Reu Taylor's to breakfast & with him to Mr. Hyde's & bought sundries & dined there. The Widow of Doctor Julian & her son were there- J.Taylor called there on his return from Fred'g but came on before us. I got Capt Herndon's waggon to take some plates & dishes at Hyde's & gave him for bringing up 1/- he also brought up my box of goods. 30, I went to Capt Burnley's, nearly the same Company were present as on the 28th The Com'rs had divided the Land into four parts, the Land next the Mountain was divided into two lots & extended across a little below John Leathers' house, above Capt Burnley's Lower gate, to Maj'r Moore's line over the run. The other lots were below & across the Land- The Land was laid in 4 lots and drawn for- Capt Burnley drew the lot his house stands, and the lot from Black Walnut to the lower end- Mr Barnes drew the Mountain lot joining Mr.Wm Taylor' on wh'ch John Leathers lives and Mr.Langhorn (for Cawthron) drew the Lot from Black Walnut up to the two Mountain Lots. Mr.Barnes exchanged the Lot he drew with Capt Burnley for his lower lot. I understood Burnley was to give Barnes a horse of £20. value for exchanging- J.Taylor dined at my father's to day & went after to Capt Burnley's- the Company all separated after busines done- 31, Very dry & warm, some clouds without rain- We dined at home- G.C.Taylor ret'd in evening from Mr.Fry's, where he went yesterday.
