1798, August, 27, I went to Court, William Twisdell paid me 10/- p/r acco't. Thomas Clark ret'd 10 dollars lent him 31 July. I paid Wm Bell 4/6 balance due for wheels &c. 28, Thick couldy morn and dropped rain not much. Sowing and plowing wheat. I walked in evening to Court house. 29, Fair and pleasant, getting dry. Sowing Wheat. A waggon of D. Triplett's brought home a pair Cart wheels shod at this shop. It would have loaded with wheat but cou'd not get same in Cellar. I walked by J. Taylor's, went to Aunt Taylor's, dined there. Mr. Howard Sen'r there- Went in evening to Court house. 30, Fair pleasant. Sowing wheat- Killed Lamb, ¼ to M. Biggers. Mess'rs John & C.P. Howard dined here. J. Pendleton here in evening. Killed a lamb- gave M. Biggers hind quarter. Next day M.B. sent me 1 doz herrings. 31, Some clouds and dropped rain in evening, warm. Sowing wheat. Let George have a Shoulder 12 lb bacon for 12/- of Ja's Daniel. John Pendleton came here in morning- going to Aunt Taylor's I walked there with him. Mrs Thomas, Mr. Jno Howard, Maj'r Moore, Bro'r James's wife, J. Pendleton & wife, C. Bell, Mrs Macon & children, Rob't Taylor & family dined there. C.P.Howard was gone to bring the Chair left to be repaired on the road about Wilderness.
September, 1, Warm morn, hazy or smoky, a few drops rain. Sowing wheat 23½ Bushels Common Wheat sown. E. Pendleton sent to get some wool, I had none to spare. Sent a basket peaches. John Pendleton dined here. Trimmed Peach trees in Garden. Killed Tatler [Rattler?-PFT]. Took out 17th Hhd Corn, Tom[G.C.T's] left off working for me. 2, Sunday, Fair and pleasant. I went to Charles Taylor's- Mr D. Triplett & family, Mr. W. Stone & do., and Reuben Burnley dined there. Mr Stone went away after dinner going to Mr Pannill's. Miss H. Triplett went with them, intending to Fred'g. I came by J. Taylor's. J. Pendleton & family, Aunt Thoams, Aunt Taylor, & Mrs Howard & Nancy Smith there. J. Taylor jr & wife called here in morning going to Maj'r Moore's. E. Pendleton & Nancy Taylor was with them & returned to J. Taylor's. 3, Cloudy morn & dropedd small rain- Cloudy all day with light small rain at times. Sent 2 bags of Corn & 1 of Old Wheat to McKinney's mill & got ground. 3 Bus' Wheat made 93 lb Flour, 20 lb Seconds. Sowed wheat in morning. I walked by J. Taylor's- J. Pendleton & family & Aunt Thomas set out for Culpeper. I walked by Robert Taylor's. Aunt Taylor, Mr John Howard, C.P. Howard & wife, dined there. aid Robert Taylor $4. for 16 Gallons molasses had in the Spring- and $5.4.6. for 29 Gallons Whisky at 3/6 & 3/- for Cask- Had in summer of Jonath Shipman. 4, Rained a little last night, cleared in morn, fair afternoon. Plowing wheat. William Edwards requesetd me to Lend him 8 dollars to pay the man who built his chimney, to Repay soon, I lent it. J. Taylor walked here and staid an hour or two in evening. Took out 18th Hhd Corn. 5, A Light shower of rain with thunder last night, clear morning. A light shower & thunder in afternoon. I killed 3 Squirrels in morning. Had a bushel of Early wheat sown on South of Spring branch, and nearly finished Sowing red wheat, finished next day the 6th, 37 bushels seeded tot he North of Spring branch. 6, Thursday, Clear pleasant morning, a light rain afternoon. I killed 3 Squirrels. Finished sowing red wheat 37 bushels seeded to the North of Spring branch. Began to pull corn blades. I walked in evening to J. Taylor's & staid an hour, Sister & Nancy had been to R'd Noel's. 7, A good rain fell last night, Sun & clouds-some drops rain. I killed 2 Squirrels Staid at home- This day to be the Barbecue at Mrs Taliaferro's. 8, Fair cool and pleasant. Reuben Taylor came and dined with me-He told me that the Board and Schooling by Mrs Taliaferro & Mr O'Neil wou'd be higher next year than the present & spoke of only sending his Billy, I advised him to continue to send Frank & promised to assist by paying for his schooling & board another year. I went in evening to J. Taylor's. he had not got from the Barbecue. Rob't T. Moore, Doct'r T.Barbour, Crutchfield & C. Bell there. Mrs Parsons got there from Culpeper after I was there.
1798, September, 9, Sunday, Hazy, My black mare brought from Mrs Burnley's. M. Biggers rode here yesterday. J. Taylor sent and got a pot part full of butter, weighed with towel 15½ lb gross, pot 6½ Nt 9 lb. weighed 10, Oct'r.Mr Daniel Triplett called here, paid me $3.12.7 in part for Bacon to be sent for. I went to J. Taylor's to dinner. Mrs Parsons, Rich'd Noel & family, *Thos Crutchfield, C. Taylor's wife & daughter Betsy & children there. [* married Ann P., dau. of James Taylor, WKA] 10, Sunshine, a little hazy. Daniel Triplett sent Charles Smith with a Waggon, who received 36¾Bushels Wheat, being the last of my old crop. I delivered him 3 Shoulders & 2 Gammons old, 2 Shoulders & 2 Gammons new Bacon, 104 Lb, see yesterday - Malachi Adkins came to agree to Oversee my plantation next year- I told him I would determine at our next Court- If I employ hin, to allow him $30. wages- find 400 lb pork, 6 Barrels Corn, 1 Bus' Salt and allow him a cow to milk. 11, A very little rain last night, warm thin clouds & hazy. J. Taylor Jun'r called here in morning. Got some peaches &c. 12, Smoky & hazy, sunshine, clouds in evening. J. Taylor jr sent Billy & got ½ Barrel Corn I had given him. Wm Stewart sent Daniel & got 3 pieces, 27 lb bacon. Mrs Burnley sent for me to dinner - Mr John Howard, C.P. Howard and wife, were there - After dinner C.P. Howard & I walked from Mrs Burnley's to Court house, and got the Newspapers - I got two, Mercer & Carter's beginning at No 41. A.Finnel paid 6/- he owed - Came by Aunt Taylor's & home. 13, Fair a smoky appearance - I dined at home - After dinner walked to J. Taylor's. Mrs Parsons there - J. Taylor jr & wife got here from Majo'r Moore's, whilst I was there. About securing [Fodder]blades, done pulling 14, Fair and warm. I sent a Gammon old bacon 10 1/2 lb, 3 lb Butter, Bread & potatoes, by Frank, to Barbecue at Courthouse - to which I went and dined &c. The Company was genteel & a good number. I paid 4/6 to J. Bell for my part incidental expenses. Received 22/- of Stephen Fox for 22 lb bacon had Aug't 19, 15, Fair warm weather. I dined at home. Finished cocking Fodder. Evening walked to J. Taylor's - he & son gone to Barnett's ford - There were several persons at J.Taylor's - 16, Sunday, Fair and warm. I walked to ( Sermon by Mr O'Neill) at Court house dined at Aunt Taylor's - Nancy & Sally Miller, Sally Burnley, Messrs Howards, there. Came home by J. Taylor's. T. Crutchfield & Mrs Parsons there. Sary had her child Christened Ben ( at C. Taylor's) C.Taylor's son Christened at same tine. 17, Fair warm morn and do. evening. Killed a Shoat, gave M.Biggers ¼Began to sow Early Wheat - A Bus'Sown 10 days ago. Mr.John Howard, C.P.Howard & James Taylor jr dined here. J.Taylor brought 7 squirrels, had 4 of them potted. 18, Broken clouds, very warm, light showers afternoon. Sent Frank with 2 bags corn & got ground at Madison's Mill. Sowing E.Wheat. I staid at home all day. 19, Cloudy warm morning, Fair day. Sowing wheat. Picked Geese, Frank sayd 40 - about 7 lb feathers. I walked by J. Taylor's, where Mrs Parsons is unwell, went to Aunt Taylor's -dined there with Reu Taylorm Reuben Smith, Mr J. Howard, C.P. Howard & wife. Went after dinner to court house, paid Smith 3/- for Soaling my shoes -Got Newspapers. 20, A little Fog. Fair, warm. Finished Sowing Wheat, 21 1/2 Bus Early- (37 bus Red; 21½ = 48½ sown); Took out 19th Hogshead Corn. Mr John Howard, C.P.Howard, Colo J.Madison jr, J.Taylor, C.Taylor & Chas Bell dined here. Began to Cut Fodder Corn tops. 21, Friday, Rained a little in last night & this morning - warm. Fair after - morn cooler. Had 7 Shoats Spayed, 2 cut & one marked and left a Boar - 1 of the spayed died immediately, had it Butchered & gave a Quarter to M.Biggers. I went to J.Taylor's - John & C.P. Howard, C.Taylor, Mrs Parsons, Nelly Barbour C. Bell & E.Chew dined there. 22, Fair pleasant very clear at night. I walked to Aunt Taylor's - Maj'r Moore, J. Moore & wife, Rob't Moore, Jas Taylor & wife, Nancy Taylor, J. Taylor jr & wife, Capt R'd Barbour, Mrs Parsons, C. Taylor, Mr John Howard, dined there.
22[372] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1798, 1798, September, 23, Sunday, Fair morning-broken clouds in evening. I went to J.Taylor's - Mrs Parsons, J.Taylor jr & wife, E Chew, dined there. 24, Fair morning - some clouds- fair evening. I walked to court, D.Triplett paid for balance of Bacon had the 10th instant, of which I made no account 31/5, Jos. Bell paid 10d for balance of Bacon had in August. I bought Table cloth, Anderson's pills & a Book, of Pedlars 21/- I agree with Malachi Atkins as mentioned the 10th instant except that he agreed to have 28 instead of $30 - There was a considerable large number of People at Court and James Barbour & Rob't Taylor spoke in behalf of sundry Resolves to be presented to the next Session of Assembly, to which Col.Johnson was almost the only dissenter. 25, Tuesday, Very clear morn & cool. Richard Noel Sent a Guinea & got 10 lb bacon & 3 dollars -28/- in return. Reuben Taylor walked here, I walked to the Court house with him. There was a sale of the Stock of Horses &c of T.Bell's Est'e which were sold at a high price. We came with Mess'rs Howard and C.Taylor's & dined there. Mrs Smock & Mrs Wardell were there- Sally & Betsy Taylor came after we got there. Frank gathered the Apples, says only a small quantity. Frank says C.Bell, J.Taylor jr's wife & Nancy Taylor had been here. 26, Some white frost in my garden, very clear, cool day. I went to C.Taylor's, Mrs. Smock, Mrs Wardell, Sally Burnley and Nancy Taylor dined there. C.Taylor expected Mess'rs Howards, but Col.Pendleton was to dine at Aunt Taylor's which prevented their coming. I killed the bees in my two old hives, suppose 3 or 4 Gallons on honey in them. 27, Clear cool morn, cloudy & warmer afternoon. C.Taylor sent 4/6 & got 4 1/2 lb Hog's lard - I went there to dinner. Mr John Howard, Mrs Smock, Mrs Wardell, Aunt Taylor, Mrs Howard & J.Taylor there. Stacked part of my Fodder tops. 28, Clear and remarkably cold for the season, and windy. J.Taylor came by, I went with him to Mrs Burnley's to dinner, his wife, J.Taylor jr's wife, Nancy Taylor Maj'r Moore,J.Moore's wife, Mr.J.Howard,Aunt Taylor, Mrs Howard, Mrs Smock, Mrs Wardell, Charles, Thomas & Milley Bell, Nancy & Sally Miller, C.Taylor, Sally & Betsy Taylor there. 29, Saturday, Very cold last night and this morning, remarkably clear-Still evening and more mild. Reuben Taylor walked here, said he wished to borrow $20. I did not lend it, as he said Mrs Taliaferro wanted it in advance for board of his sons. We walked to J.Taylor's. I walked with the latter to Rob't Taylor's. Col.E.Pendleton & wife, E.Pendleton jr & wife, Aunt Taylor, Mr.J.Howard, C.P. Howard & wife, Col.J.Madison jr & wife, Miss Ann Payne and Ch's Taylor dined there. Mrs Smock, Mrs Wardell & other company at J.Taylor's. 30, White frost, very clear day & mild evening. I went to J.Taylor's, gave him a mem'dum to get me sundry articles at Fred'g, where he is going tomorrow. Tho's Barbour & family got to J.Taylor's to dinner, he is going down with J.Taylor & I requested him to assist in getting things for me. Nancy & Sally Miller & Sally Burnley, J.Taylor jr & wife dined at J.Taylor's - C.Taylor there in evening. M.Biggers measured Wheat (a day or two ago) & says 178 Bushels in Hhds in the Wheat house. Seed sown 58 1/2, Crop this year, 236 1/2
October, 1, Monday, A little white frost, clear mild day- very dry. Sent 2 bags Corn to Madison's Mill and got ground. Wm Stewart's Daniel got 3 p/s 31 lb Bacon for his master. About getting Fodder tops togethe r- they have been to dry for several days and continue. Sent Essex to Mr.Shepherd's with Cart & got a Barrel of Herrings & 1 lb Salts, sent there by Mess'rs Blairs. Took out 20th Hhd Corn. 2, Fair and warm, Scattering clouds in evening. Finished putting up Fodder tops. I took a dose of Salts - S.Daniel taken sick yesterday but does not want to take physick. M.Biggers covered Shelter by Corn house with Slabs and dined here. Patsy Leathers was here & got 2 Setts knitting pins - J.Taylor's Cart got 4 Bus' Corn for him & 3 bushels for Roger Bell, which I lend & they are to send corn to repay, when seasoned. J.Taylor had 6 bus more the 9th - 10 total.

Diary of Francis Taylor, 1798 23 [373] 1798, October 3, Fog in morn, Fair warm, some broken clouds. I dined at home & after dinner went to Court house, got the Newspapers - Paid A.Shepherd 3/- which he had paid Acre for bringing Herrings & 1 lb salts from Blair's. 4, Fog in the morning, weather like yesterday, sent Frank with about 30 lb woolen yarn to Joseph Clark's for Mrs.Clark to weave. James Bell sent near 15 yards woolen cloth, being my proportion for the wool I let him have in the summer. I paid Mrs.Day 6/3 for Weaving the cloth. I saw her at J.Taylor's, where I waked after dinner. T.Barbour & wife there. T.Barbour got there to day from Fred'g, left J.Taylor below - says some things got for me. I semt my cart to Herndon's Mill, got 160 feetplank 8/- Zachariah Herndon came with Wagon & got 30 bus! Wheat from M.Biggers. I let him have 1/2 Bar' 1 Corn 7/6 & Cash 6d in pay for the plank, 160 feet. Took out 21st Hhd Corn. 5, Friday. Clouds in morn, soon clear and windy, very dry, warm, C.Taylor came over to breakfast. I let him have 3 pieces of bacon, a Gammon, a Shoulder & s Midling 33 lb. After dinner went to J.Taylor's - Mrs. Barbour there & children. 6, Very clear, warm and dry weather. In the evening walked to J. Taylor's, he got home from Fredricks'g to day - Brought for me the following articles: 2 Sides Soal Leather at 16 & 18 d p/r 3b. 1. 19. 9 1 Sack Salt 24/- 4 boxes pills 6/ -1 lb Salts 2/- 1. 12. 0 & paid Mercer & Carter printer for 1/2 year. 10. 0 I give his account credit for, 4. 1. 9
7. Fair and pleasant, tho very dry and dusty. I walked to Court house. Mr. O' Neil Taylor and Mr. Ben Ellis there. Mr. T. Barbour's waggon brought up the things he got for me. Also 25 lb brown sugar, which T. Barbour purchased at 1/- and I have credited in the Acco'ts or Mess'rs J. & T.Barbour & 3/- for Carriage Salt. 8, Some thin clouds in morn - fair day. I sent J. Taylor's & got 6 lb Coffee of T. Barbour a/c as above. I met Reuben Taylor and R.C. Webb, Surveyor, who surveyed Reu Taylor's entry near Lendrum's old [word crossed out] field, and mine on both sides the road joining Stephen Fox & William Quarries' lands- Rob't cawthon & Toliver Graves Hubbard carried the Chain. A brother of R. Cawthon's present. J.Taylor, C.Taylor & G.C.Taylor was there, but did not stay long. After was done surveying (about 1 o' clock) I came home and after I dinned went to J.Taylor's - C.Taylor & family, G.C.Taylor, Mrs. Wardell, T.Barbour's wife and children there and C.Bell. Maj'r Moore there in evening - J.Taylor jr & wife and Nancy Taylor returned from Culpeper in evening - The Land survyed for me lies in a long narrow slip on the upper side of the road and a triangle on the lower, and of very poor quality. G.C Taylor came up to treat with brother James for his land and the Clerk's office (if the latter can be secured him) I believe nothing is yet concluded on between them. 9, Some scattered clouds, very dry. G.C. Taylor set off from J.Taylor's to Richmond. I had a lock put on shed by the Corn house, and the Wheat put into Hhds there in. One hundred and forty odd bushels- I sent & got 10 Bus Rye from Maj'r Moore for same quality of Corn he had from me in September 1796. Mess' rs John & C.P Howard, J.Taylor, C.Taylor & J.Taylor jr dinned here. Lent J.Taylor 6 Bus old corn. 10, Cloudy morn, fair middle of day, scattered clouds in evening. Began to sow Rye on South end or Corn field, 4 Bus' sown to day. Killed a Wether sent a side to Wm Bell, 20 lb, a hind quatter sent to Wm Stewart, 10 lb & kept fore quarter. Took out 22d Hind Corn. The last taken out. J. Taylor sent & got 2 Gams & 1 Shoulder 29 lb bacon. In evening walked to Court house - got Newspapers, W.Bell pd for mutton. The Officers were exercising at Court house, by Broaddus.

11, Thursday, fair morning, Hazy evening, very dry weather. Finished putting in Rye. 5 3/4 Bushels sown, Had a Shoat killed and sent p/r George to Wm Bell 27 lb N't. Mr. John Howard rode to gate, informed me he was going to Mrs. Burnley's, and asked me to go - I walked there. Had some broken off ears of corn picked up. Maj'r Moore, Mr. J. Howard, Nancy & Sally Miller dined there. Had some broken off ears of corn picked up. 12, Cloudy, some drops rain, a light rain at night. J. Taylor sent & got 3 lb butter, rec'd 3/- Had the broken off Corn Shocked, also some gathered towards the Tabacco house it was measured, a little over 2 Hnds. 13, Cloudy - a few drops of rain. Sent 2 Bsgs -6 Bus' Corn & got meal from Madison's Mill. Reu Taylor called on me, I went to Gen' 1 Muster at Court house with him - The day being cloudy, not a full meeting. I paid John Atkins for a straw ha t- which is at Maj'r Moore's 3/- Rec'd of Wm Bell for a Shoat sent him the 11th, 13/6. Negroes were digging their potatoes. 14, Cloudy without rain, cool. I went to J.Taylor's- Rd. Noel & wife dined there. J.T. jr, his wife & Nancy Taylor were at Aunt Taylor's -- [SUNDAY]-- 15, Cloudy but no rain. I staid at home. M.Biggers planked the body of the new Cart and dined here. 16, Tuesday, Fair warm and dry. J.Taylor walked here, but did not stay for dinner. Had Potatoes of both sorts dug-but few Irish. Capt James Burton had been to C.Taylor's, who was from home, he wanted him to visit a sick son, he dined with me and staid till morn, & went again to C.Taylor's early 17th. 17,Fair and warm-very dry weather. I had a Shoat killed & sent to Wm Bell & W.Stewart p/r George, it weighted whole 24 lb Nett. J.Taylor came this morning and drew off most of his Whisky into two small casks - he & M.Biggers breakfasted here. Robert Cawthon came her after breakfast and gelded my Colt - One cook, a bricklayer, was with him - they went away about noon. Sold M. Biggers quart whisky he pd for- Lent a bottle. Went in evening to J. Taylor's -Mrs. Burnley, Mrs. Howard, Reuben Smith's wife, Nacy Miller, J.Taylor jr's wife & Reuben Newman were there. 18, Fair and warm, Pulling up hemp yesterday & to day, very ripe. Staid at home. Got some Chestnuts-sorry. 19, Cloudy day, with mist and cool. C.Taylor's Girl got 5 lb Lard - and asked me to dinner at C.T's. J.Taylor came early, emptied the Cask Whisky was in and had it carried by Grandison to Court house - he did not stay breakfast. Wm Martin got a Gammon of Bacon & paid for it. 10/6. I went to C.Taylor's. Mrs. Blair & Betsy Shepherd dined there. C.Tayor got home in the evening from Col.T.Barbour's, his wife was very ill. Frank says Mr. John Hencher was here & looked at my young Oxen. 20, Cloudy morning without rain, fair afternoon & warm. Had Sweet potatoes put into a hole under the Fodder shelter. Mostly planting roots - some larger at this end. 21, Sunday, A little fog in morn, fair warm & very dry. I went to C.Tayor's to dinner, J.Taylor & family (except J.Taylor jr), Nancy Smith & J.T jr's wife were there. Nancy & Sally Miller in the evening. 22, Fair smoky, warm morning. Hazy & thin clouds in the evening. Reuben Taylor called here. I rode with him to Court, we got Plats from Richard C.Webb for the lands he surveyed for us the 8th instant- mine 31 acres. R'n Taylor's 45 1/4 & 33. We gave the plats to G.C.Taylor to carry to Register's office. I paid Webb 33/6, his charge of fees &c, & got bill - I paid James Blair for Bar'1 herrings & 1 lb Salts 30/- Paid James McNeil in part for Smith's acco't 30/- Paid for Calf skin 12/- Received of Daniel Triplett, by Mr Howard sen'r, 30 pounds. Rec'd of Wm Stewart in part of his account 3 pounds. Rec'd of Wm Bell for Shoat sent him the 17th=24 1b. 12/- James Taylor Resigned the Office of County Court Clerk and George C.Taylor was appointed Clerk, gave bond to which I was security in 3,000 dollars for performance &c. 23, Tuesday, A little shower of rain last night - windy, clear, and very dry weather. I sent Frank to Mr. Jonathan Cowherd's & got 19 1/2 lb Tallow - Sent my Cart to J. McNeal's Shop to have irons put on it. Davy finished making shoes - 11 pair made. Began to gather corn.
