25[375] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1798 1798 October 24, A little white frost - clear. Mr. John Hencher came here to Breakfast, and looked at my Oxen, but did not purchase, till afternoon, he had been to see a pair of Mallory's and one of S.Fox's when he came back he bought the largest pair of my young Oxen at 18.- he paid 9. and to pay balance when he sells Tobacco. He dined with me, and with his boy, droff off the oxen. I walked to Court house & got Newspapers-

25, Fair and warm. I sent letters to C. Taylor's for Jon's Taylor, Hub'd Taylor, Wm. Taylor jr. & Rich'd Woolfolk, which Ab'm Proctor promised to convey to Kentucky Gathering Corn & drawing to Fodder shelter. Reu Taylor came here, I went with him to J.Taylor's who was gone to Madison Court-we returned to dinner-after he was gone I went to Ch's Taylor's in evening.

26, Fair morning-warm dry, windy-Smoky & hazy evening. I staid at home-sent 2 bags Corn & got meal at Madison's Mill.

27, Saturday, Rained before day and very moderately before noon- I fear not enough to make Wheat vegetate- Cleared afternoon,hazy- I staid at home. Had 8 Hhds Corn put in old house from the Stack. Cut off a Shirt for each of my negroes, Germ'n Ozn'a

28, Sunday, Thin clouds and cool. I walked to Court house. Mr.O'Neil did not atten, but few people. I returned home from Court house- Saw John Taylor,who with his family got to his mother's friday evening.

29, Very cold, hard frost and ice, clear. Reuben Taylor came here beforenoon. I got him to cut my Hair short- Let him have 33.9.0 to pay for Boarding & teaching his son Frank another year. R.T. went home by 11 o'cl'k. Sent Frank to Joseph Clark's with 2 lb Spun Cotton. 1 3/4 lb Wool and 16 1/2 lb thread for to get wove. Frank brought home_Yards Wooled Cloth, being part of the Yarn sent the 4th instant.

30, Very cold hard frost0 ice near inch thick on piggin, Clear cok & clouds. I had a wether killed. Sent a side 27 lb to Wm Stewart p/r George. Had 2 Ewes put in cornfield- 34 my number of Sheep. Had 22 Hhds corn put into New house. Old Brindle Cow calved.

31, Great mountains covered with Snow, continues remarkable cold, and windy, some drops rain last night-rain last night-very clear to day. Had 30 Hogs put into mountain field to fatten up. ________ ________

November, 1, Thursday,Cold, cloudy-Snowed in morning with hail and in afternoon rained, moderately till night-countinues cold, but little rain fell. I staid at home, as I have done since sunday.

2, Cloudy last night and to day, in evening late began to rain. Had 8 Hhds Corn measured, 6 of them put into Old Corn house & 2 Hhds carried to M.Biggers's

3, A little rain last night. Cloudy morn, cleared in evening. Had 5 Hhds Corn measured & put into Old Cold house.

4., Sunday, Clear morn, flying clouds in evening, cold. I went to J.Taylor's- Mr Ben Ellis, J.Taylor Jr & wife, dined there.

5, Sharp frost cear and cool. Pulling down & Carting Corn. I went after breakfast to C.Taylor's got sundry articles which he bought at Fred'g for me. amount 18/9 which I credit him0 I returned by 11 o'clock0Reuben Taylor was here went away about 12 o'clock, said was going to Maj'r moore's. Had Cabbage set in Trenches.

6, Great white frost. Fiar moderate. I carried Pattern of Jacket ^ trimmings to Mrs Burnley to get made up. As I returned went to hold a gate for the Ox Cart with Corn to come through0 The Cart ran against one post, pulled it down, it fell on me and beat me down & bruiesd my left side very much.

7, Wednesday, Great white frost again-Fair & mild- hazy at night. Sent 2 Bags Corn & got meal from M.Kinney's mill. Sent and got my light Cart from J.Mc Neil's shop. Sent Frank with Riding mare & got shod at Shepherd's Shop. My back continues very painful, from yesterday's bruise.

26 [376] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1798, 1798 November 8, Thin Clouds, moderate. J.Taylor came to see me in the morning, breakfasted here & asked to have Davy next week to make his negroes Shoes. Reu Taylor called after breakfast going to Court house &c. Rober't Cawthon had his Cart broke in the road, Camehere & got Hammer, Walls &C, wanted borrow 20 dollars, I did not lend- They sent a p/s 13 lb beef to me from J.Taylor's-I sent back a small Gammon 7 1/2 lb bacon by girl. Got most of my Corn to Stack.Worked both Carts, My back still very sore and painful.

9, A little smoky and hazy, white frost in morn, mild evening. Got the last of my Corn to the Stack. C.Taylor came here in evening to see me, my pain has become moderate to what it was. Had 4 Shoats marked (2 Cut & 2 Spayed). M.Biggers says I have only 15 out &c, besides those fattening.

10, Clear and a little cooler. Wm Edards paid me 48/- Lent him 4, Sept'r, did not stay dinner. Mess'rs John & C.PHoward came here- Isent for Brothers James and Charles who came adn they dined & staid till 8 o'clock at night. M.Biggers went to Louisa.Negroes getting wood.

11, Sunday, White frost, thing clouds, moderate, Sent Mr. T.Barbour's 18 Gallon Cask by Joe, and a message to have whisky sent to me in the same, before Chrsitmas. I went to J.Taylor's to dinner-Mr.Ben Ellis, Sally and Betsy Taylor dined there-Mr. Tom Crutchfield came there after dinner. J.T.jr & wife at Maj'r Max Moore's-E. Chew unwell. Had a puppy from John Taylor's bitch brought home, but it appears to have a shoulder broken.

12, Smoky, hazy and warm. J. Taylor sent 19 lb Tallow-for which I sent 2 Gammons bacon 19 lb. I walked to Aunt Taylor's-John Taylor & family, Rob Taylor & do Mrs Burnley & do. Mr John Howard C.P.Howard and wife dine there- Mrs Gambrell & Ch's Bell there after dinner. C.P.Howard received my watch to have clearned &c, when he goes to Philadelphia,where he intends in a few days- Mr.JHoward lent me a small watch. I sent Frank with a bag of 3 Bus Wheat & Martin 2 1/2 Corn to Madison's mill they got the grain ground & got back about an hour after dark. 96 lb Flour & 28 lb Seonds, 123 lbs.

13, Thin clouds in morn moderate rain in evening, mild. Had a wether killer-sent Wm Bell a side 31 lb p/r Davy, sent Wm Stewart a hind quarter 15 lb by Daniel. Had 16 1/2 doz Candles made, 8 lb bees wax, 46 Tallow, 54 lb. I went by J.Taylor's to Robert Taylor's to dinner. Aunt Taylor, Mr J.Howard, C.P.Howard & wife, John Taylor and family there.

14, Not much rain last night- some Clouds,sunshine and smoky,warm for the season. I am unwell, pain in back worse than for 2 or 3 days0 took Castor oil and afterwards Salts. Sent Frank with jug to Aunt Taylor's & got Cyber. I went in evening & got a jacket made for me by Mrs Burnley-who was gone to Rob't Taylor's- Sally & Lucy Burnley at home.

15, Warm windy, sunshine & Clouds- Fog in last night. Had 11 Cart loads, 22 Hhds Corn put in New house; 5 do in old = 10 Hhds,= 32. M.B. says 2 Hhds, by my acc't are omitted. J.Taylor walked here in evening0to borrow my gun to go tomorrow to stand for deer: he is to call for it.

16, A little dash of rain last night with lightning. Fair warm day. J.Taylor called ^ got my gun, to deer hunt with0did not start. Finished Measuring Corn. Wholemade 95 Hhds at 11,5/8 Bus Each= about 221 Barrels. Put into Old Corn house 5 Hhds. M.Biggers had 11 Hhds measured02 Carred away and 9 left in Shelter. I walked to J Taylor's in the evening. Mr Noel & wife and J.Taylor jr was there0 Bro0r James adn family going tomorrow to Culpeper- I brought my gun home. Gave M.Biggers credit for 5 Bus Corn. being his part of 4 Hhds put into my Corn house, he having before sent to Mill 2 bushels & received 13 Hhds- I gave him a State of teh Settlement of the Corn being fully made. His part was 1/7 of Corn & 1/6 Wheat.

17, Saturday, Some clouds, but cleared,warm smoky & hazy. Mr.John Howard, John Taylor & son Billy rode here in evening and staid about two hours.

18, Warm, smoky and Sunny. I walked to Court house- Mr.O'Neil did not meet. I paid Doct'r Shepherd 3/- for a pair Shoes on my mare the 7th instant. I came to

1798, November 18, [Continued], Aunt Taylor's to dinner, John Taylor and family, Mr. John Howard & Mrs Howard there - C.P. Howard set out last thursday for Philadelphia.

19, Distant thunder last night, some drops rain in morning, Windy with broken clouds & changed cooler. Sent Essex & L.Peter & brought a young steer of mine from Reu Taylor's. Stephen Fox breakfasted here & offered me 9/- p/r bushel for wheat. I changed or gave M. Biggers 38 dollars & 6.4 & his acco't 1.5.9.euros for 10 pieces French & Spanish gold. euros 13.0.1. - Patrick Bell got a waggon load of M.Biggers's corn sold by the latter to Anthony Garton. Mr. John Howard, John Taylor, Reuben Taylor & _________ Kendall dined here.

20, Snow on G. Mountains, Cold windy with flying clouds. Had my old Bull killed; not fat weighed about 360 or 370 lb. sent about 25 lb in 2 pieces to M.Biggers. M.Biggers deliv'd Pat Bell the balance of 9 Hhds[?] corn for A.Garton. John Taylor & Jons Shipman came in evening & staid 2 or 3 hours.

21, Wednesday, Sharp frost water frozen in small branches- Clouds & sunshine. I went to Mr. D. Triplett's store and settled my account with him to this day- when the balance due to me was £137.5.2. by account received- to carry interest from 1st, Sept'r last. Dan'l Triplett agreed to give me 9/- p/r bushel for my present crop of wheat- The goods I purchased to day & hereafter to go towards payment for the wheat, and the balance(if any) at the end of one year to be paid in Cash- I reserved it in my option to sell a waggon load of the wheat to some other person, or let D.Triplett have the whole, supposed 130 or 140 bushels- I went to D.Triplett's to dinner0 Mr. John Howard, Mrs. Burnley, Salley Burnley & Mrs Howard there. I returned home in evening.

22, Sharp frost, windy, clear and cool. Patrick Bell came for an ox left here the 20th & got it. I walked to stephen Fox's he was gone to Fred'g. I bought some articies & paid for them0ret'd by 2 o'clock to dinner. Mr.John Gibson cam here about sunset, left his family at C.Taylor's-staid with me.

23, Cool and cloudy. I sent Frank and got some goods from Aunt Taylor's brought from D.Triplett's, in the carriage Mrs Howard &c went & came down in. After breakfast I walked with Mr Gibson to C.Taylor's. C. Taylor got hom from Fred'g about noon. Mr.Gibson & family, Miss Molly Mallory & sister dined at O.Taylor's

24, Sharp frost-remarkably clear-not very cold. Sent Moses & Martin to Madison's Mill- got home with meal in night. Mr.J.Howard came here- I sent a boy to ask bror's James & Charles. Brother James- J.Taylor jr & Charles Bell came and they dined here- I measured a piece oznaburg(got of D.Triplett marked 50- and charg-ed 50 Ells) in presence of Mr.John Howard- it measured only 48 1/2 yards

25, Sunday, Cold and clear sharp frost, continues very dry. I staid at home.

26, Sharp frost-moderate and clear. I rode to Court- Saw Malachi Adkins, we signed two Articles of agreement for his overseeing my business-I kept one & gave him the other. Informed Mr.D.Triplett that the linen I had from him was only 48 1/2 yards-he promised to rectify the charge. I left with him a paper mention-ing the settlement made the 21st inst and bargain made for wheat sold-for him to sign. Stephen Fox agreed to give me 9/- p/r bushel for a Waggon load of wheat to be taken from my house next week-to be paid for in goods-or in cash on 12 months credit. Paid ___Cowherd for Tallow got of his father 23rd Oct'r 18/7. Let Larkin Clark have 4 dollars to pay his mother (in part) for weaving, 24/- Lent William Gibson one dollar, 6/- Recieved of Wm Bell for 1/2 a Mutton had the 13th instand 15/-Received a pr double vamped Shoes of John Henshaw & Cr. his acco't.

27, Sharp frost- Smoky, hazy and moderate-very dry. Sent Frank & Martin with Corn to Madison's Mill, he left it, came by Jos Clark's & brought home cloth, wove by Mrs Clark, also from T. Richard's Store 1/4 lb Tea. I wrote for on C. Taylor's acc't Sent 1/4 Mutton to Wm Bell & rec'd payment for 14 lb 6/- & grog. M.Biggers & my people went with Cart & brought 2 loads Slab timber from Reu Taylor's land. I rode to Court-dined at W.Bell's-

28 [378] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1798, 1798 NOVEMBER, 28, Sunshine, very smoky and mild. Got more slab timber brought home,2 loads. C.Taylor came in morning to see Sary's child-brought me another 1/4 lb Tea-and wrote to T.Richard for 1 M 10d.Nails which I received by Frank,who went to Mill and got meal, he carried Corn yesterday. Sent 3/9 to Mrs Clark by Frank, balance due for weaving. C.Taylor breakfasted & said he intended going to W.Madison's. I walked to Court- G.McCall & Co suit vs me not called, Court did but little business & adjourned to Co't in course. 29, Thin clouds, very smoky and no frost this morn, mild. I walked to Stephen Fox's store, bought sundry articles to amount of $4.6.1 1/2 Capt Johny Scott & family J.Scott jr & wife, Mrs Herndon, Maj'r Moore,J.Tayor,Reu Taylor, & Rob't Cawthon &c were there. I returned in evening to dinner. Gave M.Biggers a small Should of Bacon. 30, The weather continues very dry,smoky and moderate. I staid at home- C.Taylor called in the evening & went to see Sary's child-who continues sick.

December, 1,Saturday, Cloudy,smoky morning-A little fine rain in evening. Reuben Taylor called here- I walked with him to J.Taylor's. Carried Letters to go to Kentucky by Durret Sanford who sent a boy for business at the office,who took the letters- To Jonathan Taylor, Hub'd Taylor,G.G.Taylor, R'd Woolfolk, W.Taylor & Wm Taylor jr.,also letters from Bror's James,Charles & Reuben. We dined at J.Taylor's- J.Taylor jr with his wife & Nancy, had been to store at Goldby's- Ret'd before we came away. Jacob Williams was at Office & dined at J.Taylor's Reuben Taylor took his 2 & my 1 plats for Land with the Warrants to carry to Surveyor(which had been returned by the Register for not being in form) to be rectified2, Rained a little moderately last night,clouds and very little rain to day. I walked to J.Taylor's. J.Taylor jr & wife there. I dined there.[SUNDAY] 3,Very clear,west wind but not very cold. I delivered Joseph Robinson 50 bushels wheat for Stephen Fox, weighed a small bag & 2 Bushels, 116 lb- Let J.Robinson have 19 lb Fodder for same. Let E.Chew's Hannah have 3 1/2 yards Ozn'a & thread. Made preparations to Kill Hogs tomorrow. 4, Turned very cold, Broken clouds,very windy-Snowed at Mountains, Had 23 Hogs killed- Weight below- Left 8 fatten longer. 200-180-164-161-156-152-151-148-147-145-140-130-125-120-118-113-111-107-104-100-87-83-65-=Total Nt. 3,007lb Had them Salated & packed up. Used 5 1/2 Bushels Salt & 1 lb Saltpetre. 5, Wednesday. Severe cold night, windy and clear. Milk froze. Had gut fat refined & Hogs feet cleaned. I walked to Mrs Burnley's. She had not gone from home from Mr.Triplett's. 6, Continued very cold- Clouded in latter part of night & began to Snow about sunrise & continued till evening, ab't an inch deep. About refining Leaf Fat-and making Sausages- Sent Frank to Mrs Burnley's to ask if she wouo'd cut out my Negroes Clothes- She sent word not till last of next week. 7, Frost on Trees-thin clouds- hazy or smoky-chilly weather. the snow did not half go of. Macon Biggers had the Cart two trips and removed his family to Col.Willis's quarter. D.Triplett sent Gibson's Jonathan & waggon. I delivered him 45 Bushels Wheat. Wrote for sundries when he comes again. Receipt the 8th for 40, 48/60 Wheat received. 3 Duffil Blankets & 3 pair Shetland hose. 8, Rained a little in morning, cloudy cool day. D.Triplett sent same Waggon as yesterday. I delivered 48 1/2 Bushels Wheat, about 40 of it early. Took all. Jonathan brought 3 D.Blankets & 4 pair coarse yarn hose. 9, Sunday, Rained most of last night-and all day moderately. Jonathan staid(here last night & set off early this morning. I staid at home.

29 [379] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR,1798. 1798, December, 10, Rained a good deal last night till about midnight,it froze,a little snow covered the ice. Some broken clouds to day, some ice remained on the twigs &c till night. Malachi Atkins came this morning to let me know he is ready to remove whenever I will send my Cart- I sent him to Roger Bell to enquire if the waggon which removes him down can bring Atkins up. Brother James rode to my gate brought a letter from Bro'r Jonathan-gave me a notice in writing for Robert T.Moore requesting me if I saw him to give him- Which I did at Mrs Burnley's, Where I walked to-day- Reuben Burnley & wife, Miss Lucy Richard, Betsy Triplett, Maj'r Moore, Capt John Moore, Rob't Moore, G.L.Grasty, Mr.J.Howard,John Tayor, his wife, Mrs Howard, Nancy Taylor, Sally & Betsy Taylor dined there. Fanny Madison & Dr Shepherd. I came home before dark. I paid Mrs Burnley a dollar for making Vest, she said it was more than she charged- She promised to cut my Negroes' Cloaths out this week. 11, Flying clouds, Showers of snow,but little,some sun, cool. I sent Frank & Martin & got Corn ground at Madison's Mill. I walked to C.Taylor's. The Company that was at Mrs Burnley's yesterday(except John Taylor's wife, Mrs Howard & Nancy Taylor) dined there, also Jas Taylor and Mr D.Triplett. John Taylor invited me to dine at his mother's tomorrow,the company to be there. Malachi Atkins came (with his family) to be my overseer- Roger Bell removed him with his waggon, for doing which I agreed to pay & paid 24 Dec'r 15/- 12, Wednesday- Sharp frost- cool,hazy & thin clouds afternoon. I walked to Aunt Taylor's- Mr Daniel Triplett, Reuben Burnley & wife, Miss Lucy Richard, Betsy Triplett, Mrs Burnley's daughters, Rob't Taylor & family, John Taylor & do. Mr John Howard, J.Taylor & C.Taylor there. I went by J.Taylors- T. Barbour's wife & children there. Col.James Barbour & Rob't Moore called at J.Taylor's and went away before noon,going to Madison County. 13, Cloudy misty till evening, rained briskly several hours. Macon Biggers got 2 1/2 bus' Wheat,being the full balance of his share of crop made this year. Mr.John Howard, John Taylor, Rob't Taylor, James Taylor & Charles Taylor dined here. Robert Taylor went away at night, the rest of us sat up all night at Whist. M.Atkins had 1/2 Bus'l Corn sent to mill- I sent 3 bushels & got ground at McKinney's. 14, Cleared before day- moderate frost & fine day. J.Taylor went home early. Mr. J.Howard, John Taylor and Charles Taylor after breakfast. Had 8 remaining fattened hogs killed- They weighed 881 lb Nett- Let Malachi Atkins have four, 400 ln Nt, Vizt. 116- 97- 94, & 93. The others I kept 131-123-122- & 105 lb. let M.Atkins have 1/2 Bus Salt. Cut & Salted 4 Hogs I kept, in evening. 15, Sharp frost. Clear and cool- turned cooler at night. Had the Leaf fat refined. I rode to Hackley's Store,bought an Iron pot 26 lb paid 8/-. Sent Frank for the pot and hard Lard put in it. When I returned Frank told me J.Taylor had sent for me. As I went, saw Wm Twisdell,who wanted some wool & to borrow money- I did not supply his wants. I dined at J.Taylor's- G.C.Taylor, T.Barbour & J.Taylor jr got there last evening from Richmond. T.Barbour's family, Mrs Bell, J's Bell & wife, Rob't Moore & C.Bell, C.Taylor and above from Richmond dined there. M.Atkins went to J.McNeils to get Sorril mare shod but McNeil was killing hogs & did not shoe her. Frank went yesterday with Cloth to Mrs Burnley's to get Coats & breeches cut for my negro men, and this evening,brought the Coats. Breeches not cut. 16, Sunday. Harad frost,clear & cool till evening, hazy & thin clouds. I walked to Aunt Taylor's. Mr.C.P.Howard got there last evening from Philadelphia. I received my Watch,which he had repaired for me,which cost 2 1/2 dollars- Mr John Howard Rob't Taylor & family, John Taylor & do. C.P.Howard and wife,dined there. I came by J.Taylor's. T.Barbour & family went home to day. J.Taylor jr & wife at Maj'r Moore's.
