Matthew McCauley, Pioneer Settler of Orange County, N.C.

Matthew McCauley, came from Carrickfergus, County Astrim, in the
northern part of Ireland, about fifty miles from Belfast. He settled in Orange
County, N.C. near the present site of Chapel Hill.

He was a Commissioned Officer in the Continental Line during the
Revolutionary War ( See N. C. Colonial Records Vol. 10, Page 936). He and his
older brother, William McCauley who has preceded him to this country were among
the donors of the site for this State University.

Matthew McCauley married Martha Johnston (M. B. Feb. 1, 1783), a
daughter of Charles Johnston and Martha (Blackwood) Johnston, and a granddaughter
of William Blackwood and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Craig) Blackwood.

Matthew McCauley and Martha (Johnston) McCauley had nine children
