Needs Review

To all persons to whom this presents shall come I John Morgan do send greeting Know ye that I the said ohn Morgan of Orange County & State of North Carolina for & in consideration of the love good will & affection in which I have & do bear towards my three sons Mark Morgan, John Morgan and Solomon P. Morgan of the same County, have given & granted & do by these presents freely give & grant unto my two sons Mark Morgan and John Morgan the following land & premises to be divided between them in the following form & manner & form that is to say beginning at a line run by Chuston North down the Hill called the Dry Hill into Morgan's Creek thence down the Creek to the mouth of a Branch called the Big Branch on the north side of the Creek thence the various courses of the said Branch from the mouth up to Barbee's line including the lands on both sides of the said creek from the aforesaid run by Chuston and from the aforesaid branch down to the County line containing by estimation Eleven hundred acres be the same more or leſs, the said land to be divided between them in the following manner viz My son Mark to have the upper half of the said land with the plantation whereon I now live and my son John the lower half of the said land Also I give to my son Mark one hundred acres of land

adjoining Hardy Morgan's land and Edmund Jameses land also I give to my son one hundred acres of land lying on the head of Billy Morgan's Creek and waters of Abed's Creek Also two negroes viz Derby & Ben Also I give to my son Mark two negroes Gid & Agg Also I give to my son Solomon Park Morgan all the rest of land in said County above my son Mark's upper boundary including the plantation where on John Scott now lives Also two negroes viz Peter & Dephia Also I give to my son Mark Morgan all my stock of horses, Cattle Sheep & hogs and all my working tools belonging to the plantation with all my house hold and Kitchen furniture with every thing else I have before given To have & hold all the said goods and chattels in the said premises to them the said Mark John & Solomon Park their heirs or aſsigns from henceforth as then o and and their proper goods and Chattels absolutely without any manner of Conditions, In witneſs whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this

Matthew McCauley, Pioneer Settler of Orange County, N.C. (sent to Dr. Graham by John A. Holmes)

Matthew McCauley, came from Carrickfergus, County Astrim, in the northern part of Ireland, about fifty miles from Belfast. He settled in Orange County, N.C. near the present site of Chapel Hill.

He was a Commissioned Officer in the Continental Line during the Revolutionary War ( See N. C. Colonial Records Vol. 10, Page 936). He and his older brother, William McCauley who has preceded him to this country were among the donors of the site for this State University.

Matthew McCauley married Martha Johnston (M. B. ), a daughter of Charles Johnston and Martha (Blackwood) Johnston, and a granddaughter of William Blackwood and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Craig) Blackwood.

Matthew McCauley and Martha (Johnston) McCauley had nine children ( See Original Wills of Matthew McCauley, John McCauley and Martha (Johnston) McCauley in the Archives of the North Carolina Historical Commission. )
