Mr. Johnston,

Dear Sir,
On subjects like this when peace of mind and hap
piness are so much concerned, ceremony and complimants are both dis
gusting and unnexessary, therefore I shall peoceed. For the want
of confidence or assurance I make use of this means of expressing
my solicitude for your approbation of a ,atter the purport of
which is nothing less than an alliance in your family; or, in oth-
er words I most cordially crave your assent to am union with your
Daughter ( to wit, Polly). I is by the permission of that amiable
girl that I anow presume to step forward with this request. I hope
that you will consider that upon your determination depends my futu
Happiness or disquietude. Let this serve in place of a verbal com
munication. Sir, I esteem it a matter of the greatest magnitude
with me. Therefore I with pleasure wait on you for an answer in
any manner that you shall think proper.

I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant,

Joel Battle.
