Wednesday March 11

Cloudy, with a few light dashes of rain -- not enough to dampen the dust -- Busy today straightening out my things -- Found a bottle of castor oil broken in my trunk & had a nasty mess of it to clean out -- quart bottle -- all ran out among my clothing, specimens, etc -- Evening at home -- slept in parlor chair about an hour -- wife & I went to post office -- got the copy of the "Statistician" that I sent for -- Bed at 10 --

Clear & pleasant -- Busy preparing to go to Austin tomorrow -- Evening the same -- Bed at 11 --

Friday March 13

The same -- After a light breakfast took east bound train at 8 -- Met Hinchcliffe, Tom McCourt, and A Mante of the Belmont Courier, wife & 4 children, also bound for Austin -- At Wadsworth the conductor took me to J A [Whited?] Supt of the C P section between Truckee and Winnemucca -- delivered letter from Powning asking him to pass me over the road to Winnemucca from Reno, -- He told conductor to do

so -- Dined at Humboldt House -- At Winnemucca I bought a round ticket to Battle Mounain & back for $6.60 -- Arrived at B M at 4, & at 4 1/2 PM left on Nevada Central for Austin, with the above mentioned persons -- Austin at 11 -- sharp cold air, but no snow on ground -- Met Summerfield & in response to a tele-

gram I sent him from Reno this morning he gave me my room keys -- Took my valise up to room & found all right -- Went down to John [Lueljens'?] saloon, & he was ever so glad to see me -- Postmaster Gibson soon came as he has mail to attend to at a different time, owing to change to tri-weekly trains & mail since 1st of March -- Had some hot drinks and a long social talk -- Bed at 3 -- couldn't spar my way over the Nev. Central, but had to put up $9 passage money -- just before leaving Battle M for Austin today, Mrs Huntsman gave me a beautiful fresh Humboldt trout -- About 3 lbs --

The same -- Rose at 9 AM -- About town most of the day, meeting numerous friends -- Wrote -- sent letter to wife, as mail leaves here about 10:30 AM -- Evening about town -- Bed at 11 --

Clear & pleasant -- About town -- Bed at 12 -- Partial eclipse of the sun today, just before noon -- About one forth of surface obscured -- lots of smoked glass in use all over the town --

Tuesday March 17

Cloudy but pleasant -- PM I walked up to the mill -- It is shut down since about Jan 22nd, but will start up again in about 2 weeks -- Was at Manhattan office -- Brought home a 5 lb bit of rick rock -- Dined at Mrs Leland's with L B Ball assistant Sec'y of Manhattan co -- Evening about town -- Wrote letter to J P Jones, Washington D.C. Also one to J H [Whited?], Wadsworth -- Supt CPRR notifying him

leaving the Clifton depot -- Was about town some -- Evening at Tom Ivey's residence & saw him relative to buying my old cabin & lot -- They had a 5 days old baby boy there, and Mrs Ivey was now sitting up, nursing it -- Home at 11 1/2 -- Wrote, read,

etc, -- Pat Kelly, a saloon man, next room to me, came home at 1 & he had a bottle of whisky & we partook & had a long and pleasant talk -- Bed at 3 -- At Tom Ivey's I found a 5 day old baby, a boy -- They were married several months ago -- Was very nicely treated at Ivey's -- Shall make item for Reveille --

Thursday March 19

Cloudy -- PM a few thunder showers -- laid the dust -- still trying to sell my ranch -- Was up to the [Buel?] North Star mine -- (Tom Ivey's?) & had talk with [Blakeney?] -- couldn't sell to him -- After supper I went up to cabin -- Lighted three candles and went to work packing, or rather re-packing my little odds and ends -- Worked hard and it took me all night --

Monday March 20

Cloudy, but pleasant -- Home from cabin at 4:30 AM with shoulder load of tools -- Laid down on bed in my clothes & slept about an hour -- Went up to cabin again to meet Alfred Phillips -- sold him my work bench for $5 - Then went to Starratt's and took the tools I bought down from the cabin this morning - round pointed shovel,

axe and 7 lb sledge -- Harry Potthoff, the clerk, allowed me more than half price for them -- He had sold my big old cookstove which I left in cabin for $20, and for these tools he allowed $6 -- I owed Starratt back account for pipe and other hardware $28.32, so I now paid the balance $2.35 and squared the account -- I settled with Mrs [Timlin] for 2 months room rent due, by her taking my little office stove I have in my room -- So now all I woe in Austin is $25 balance to Dr Hammond -- Found Tom Service & his job wagon, & got him to haul my boxes, etc, from the

cabin to the R R depot -- 5 boxes, and the bundle of garden tools, flags etc -- Also hauled the lumber I had in cabin to Nicholls' lumber yard -- It being all in 1st rate order, I was allowed what I paid for it --13 boards, and 6 2x4 [scantling?]-- 14 ft long -- $16.50 -- pretty good luck --Thus I vacate my old cabin -- Tried hard to get my desk and things packed in time for down train at noon but couldnt make it -- Engaged Mike Finigan, the Carpenter to do it, with Summerfield to assist him -- Rolled & tied my banjo and fiddle into one of my bed comforters -- packed valise went down to Hotel & took passage at 12, noon for Battle M. enroute to Reno -- Hinchcliffe, the R R Supt had promised me a free
