Cold Snap Mrs Hiller dead Hail Fruit all killed Wife coming Mike Farrell here

Wednesday May 13

Cloudy & chilly & blustering, with occasional snowflakes in the air -- As usual -- Through tonight at 1 1/2 -- Bed at 2 -- ground white with snow & a few sprinkles still coming down -- Mike Farrell & wife from Austin on a visit to Gold Hill --

Thursday May 14

The same -- Quite a hail storm about 11 AM -- More during PM -- Got letter from wife -- death notice in it, clipped from SF Chronicle of death of Mrs Hiler, at Butte Montana, May 6 -- aged 67 yrs -- remains brought to Oakland for burial -- I got through at 12:40 tonight -- Bed at 2:40 -- Almost freezing

Friday May 15

The same -- no hail or snow but chilly -- The cold snap of the last 2 or 3 nights has killed all the fruit in this county -- telegram from wife says will come tomorrow - Through tonight at 12 -- Bed 1 --

Cloudy cool and pleasant -- Wife arrived on train at 10 -- Breakfast at [Chammond's?] -- Bought some clothes for our boys -- then she went to Gold Hill -- I walked with her to neat the Imperial works & turned back -- She visited parties in Gold Hill and came up on the evening train -- I met her & she & Mrs Chubbuck et

A pleasant Walk Wife Returns to Reno

Sunday May 17

The same -- Slept till 9 -- Rose -- shaved & fixed up, and at 11 went to breakfast at [Chanmond's?] Good -- Then we went out on the Geiger Grade for a walk -- nearly to Hall's [Lanndy?] Pleasant walk -- had one small rain and hail shower to bother us but it didn't amount to much -- Home at 2 to my room -- made fire & we read, and enjoyed each others society lovingly till nearly 5 -- then dined at [Chanmond's?] and went to train -- at 5:25 she left for Reno -- I was about town till 9 PM -- Then home -- read etc till 12 -- Bed -- When wife & I returned from our very pleasant walk out on the Geiger Grade we went up Sutton Avenue to Summit st & around by Taylor st home -- taking a look at upper part of city --

Cloudy & vairable -- Chilly & blustering -- Work as usual -- Big fire about 10:40 oclock -- Original Keystone Mining Company's works -- Worth awhile ago $30,000 -- Supposed incendiary fire -- Col Shaw rode out there in a buggy & took the items -- He wrote it up -- Bed 2 1/2 -- Mike Farrell called in office this AM -- going back to Austin & I gave him $3 to pay Mike Finigan

Tuesday May 19

The same -- more pleasant -- As usual -- got letter from Sam Crescengo, Austin, asking about stocks, and from Mrs H D Johnson, Truckee, Nee Ella Emerson -- asking for a certain copy of the News, couldn't remember date or anything else, except a mentioning her as "Assistant Engrossing clerk of the Legislature" in

1872 or '74 -- Wrote & sent letter to Mike Finigan Austin, telling him of the $3 I paid Mike Farrell to give him for his services in fixing up my desk etc after I left Austin -- also wrote letter to Harry Clanson Ogden encolsing one of my C P tickets for him to sell -- Also letter to CC Powning of Reno Journal, telling him not to forget my passes which he thinks he can sell for me -- Through in office at 1 1/2 -- Home -- wrote letter responding to that from Ella Emerson -- Bed at 3 1/2

Wednesday May 20

Clear & somewhat blustering & dusty -- Rose at 11 AM -- Work as usual -- Bed at 2 1/2 Sent letter to Summerfield, Reno this PM

Hair trimmed Freezing cold snap Ice

The same -- As usual -- got my hair trimmed today by Brodik, 1st time since I was in Austin last March 17 -- Through in office at 1:30 -- Bed at 2:30 Freezing some --

Friday May 22

Clear & pleasant, but cool -- Ice froze an 1/8 of an inch thick in various parts of the city -- Around lively today, & got up good mining report -- Got through at 1 oclock tonight -- Bed at 2 --

Off for Reno -- Olives -- Goodie Sick

Saturday May 23

Clear & pleasant -- The colonel's wife & children came up from Carson this morning, so he was with them most of the day -- Evening he went to Carson with them -- Jim Townsend did, the telegraphic for him tonight -- I worked as usual -- Through at 1 1/2 -- Bed at 3 -- cold --

Sunday May 24

The same -- Rose at 6:30, shaved and at 8 AM left on train for Reno -- Took along dirty clothes, etc, and a 2 quart candy jar which I got filled with olives yesterday at Hatch Bros -- Finest kind of Queen olives Spanish imported -- 4 bits a quart -- Found all right at Reno except Goodie -- She had worms, or a cold, or something similar -- very feverish dull & sleepy -- The young ones as well as the old ones pitched into the olives lively, for we are all very fond of them -- PM

down town awhile with Alf and Sam -- Was down town in the evening after supper, alone -- at the RR depot when trains came from Va and the East -- Met Powning --

Clear & pleasant -- Rose at 6 -- My little Goodie better -- Left on 7:10 train for Va -- Arrived at 10 -- Went to work at usual -- Evening through at 2 -- Bed at 3:30

Tuesday May 26

The same -- Slept till 11:30 -- Got letter from wife, enclosing pass, & stating that Goodie was worse & she had to call in Dr Dawson -- He says she has bilious intermittent fever, which, if not broke will run 3 weeks -- I replied to her letter by evening mail -- Through in office at 2 -- Bed at 2:30 --

Wednesday May 27

Clear & pleasant -- Met Lew Stevenson on C street this noon, arrived from Leadville where he has been for the last 3 or 4 yrs, mining, etc -- I think he is glad to get back, and feels like the prodigal son of his father CC Stevenson of Gold Hill -- Reported 4th of July meeting this evening & through in office at 2 -- Bed at 3 --

Thursday May 28

The same -- Warmer -- AM about town -- At 1 pm, an open buggy & horses awaited me at the Enterprise office, and my old friend & pard, Dan B Sohl was the driver, to take me to Gold Hill, to inspect a new refrigerator room at C J Waider's meat
