passing -- Many trains also have gone the southern route via Los Angeles -- We found all right at home -- Millie recovered suffiently to be out at Andrews' ranch 2 or 3 miles from town on a visit -- Trains from the East very late tonight -- At 11:30 the train with General Logan on board arrived & put up for the night -- Big time -- firing of anvils, brass band, speech from Logan, etc - Big crowd to see him -- 15 cars -- 500 people on board -- As I went to bed at 10 I didn't see nor hear any of it -- Very hot here today - about 100⁰ -- Three 15 car trains full of the Grand Army passed through tonight -- Made big thundering noise, reminding some of the war --

Same -- A G Koch, a German [???] & plumber whom I have known ever since I have been here, shot, & killed himself this morning at his place of business on C street short distance north of Enterprise office -- Financial embarrassments the cause -- leaves wife & 3 children -- 49 yrs old -- Work as usual -- Bed at 4 --

Thursday Aug 5
Same -- Sell Bros great Circus and Menagerie came this morning from Reno where they showed yesterday PM & last evening -- PM I got 2 tickets at Enterprise office and took Harry Johns with me to circus -- Big street parade -- Heard the Calliope for the 1st time -- Dreadful music -- scary to all decent animals -- Pretty good show -- Evening had biggest house -- About 6,000 people -- Tent as big as Barrett's last year, & all the seats jam full -- About 12:30 George Skelding came up in office to see me, & we went across to Mika Flynn's & had a drink together -- He came up from Reno this evening & left with the circus tonight for Carson where it shows tomorrow -- Bed at 4 --

Grand Army Returning Tomatoes gone 86⁰ Gen Logan Coming
Monday Aug 9
Clear & warm -- Wife & all our kids went with me to train & I left on time at 7:10 the train from Cal being just on time -- Our train was filled, every seat, with returns from SF & Grand Army etc -- Arr at 10 -- on time -- Had to threw away my tomatoes I put up July 21, as they were soft and "working" -- The apricots and gooseberries, put up on July 9 are good yet especially the Apricots -- Afriad gooseberries are fermenting -- Bed at 3 -- Meeting of prominent citizens held this evening at Odd Fellows Hall to make preparations for receiving General John A Logan on Friday -- He is coming with his attending crowd, about 30, by way of Lake Tahoe & Carson -- over the railroad -- Cohen was present at meeting, & reported for me -- Hot 86 deg --

Same -- As usual -- Evening attended adjourned citizens Committee on Logan reception & reported -- Held at I.O.O.F. building -- Bed 3:30 -- Put up a small jar of plums today in "Rex Magnus" --

Same -- Democratic primaries for delegates to State Convention -- Liveliest I ever saw, without any fighting of any consequence [Gov Jewett W Adams?] won his delegates by big majority in the whole county, Theodore Winters beaten -- It was a "cold day" and Winters got left -- Bed 3 --

Same -- Skirmished some on mining report items, on acc't of Logan reception tomorrow -- Reported Logan meeting this evening again -- Bed 3:30 -- 86⁰ today --

Same -- Logan & party arrived at 1 PM in special car from Carson -- They got to Carson at 8 last evening from the lake, so had to sleep late this morning, -- Flags all over city- like 4th of July -- 13 in Logan party, with several Carsonites of note -- Taken in carriage through principle streets to International, B street entrance -- Music- Logan & Gov Alger of Michigan spoke from C street balcony to big crowd -- Stood in hotel office & everybody passed through & shook hands with him -- In evening after dinner, they were serenaded by band, & he & Alger spoke again from C street balcony -- Bed 3:30 -- 85⁰ today --

A little cloudy & cooler -- Work as usual -- The Logan party rode to Sutro, came through the tunnel, and to the 1600 level of the combination shaft -- Logan and Alger and

3 ladies were lowered to 3200 & saw some of the drifts, etc, & all they need to see of a mine -- Logan, Alger & 3 or 4 more of the party left for Carson at 4 PM to go to the state prison & see the prehistoric tracks in the quarry yard -- & join the rest of their crowd who went down on the 5:25 passenger train, & all went on to Reno, where a big reception awaits them -- They will stay over there -- & take the East bound train in the morning for home -- Bed 4 -- 83 deg today --

Sunday Aug 15
Same -- Hot day -- 87 deg in Va, and 97 in Reno -- Only had 2 hours sleep this morning -- & took train at 7:20 for Reno -- Slept 1/2 an hour on the train -- Found all right at Reno -- I took with me to Reno in my shawl & strap three packages of "Crushed Indian" and two big crabs that I bought on Friday and have had in Louis Hirschberg's ice closet ever since till I got ready to start for Reno -- We all had lots of crab -- & they were good -- Thermometer showed 97 deg this PM in shade on front porch -- I laid down & slept a couple of hours -- Suffered from the unusual heat -- Millie came home from Andrews' ranch this evening -- She is feeling much better -- Her beau, Ruel Waggoner brought her home in a buggy -- Evening me & mine sat on front porch & had [plagolets,?] banjo & songs -- also mosquitos -- Bed at 10 --
