1887 End of State Fair Return to Virginia
Saturday Oct 1, 1887
Clear & very warm -- Last day of the Fair -- Visited the Pavilion, also the Fair Grounds -- At the latter place, grand stock parade and award of premiums -- blue ribbons put on the winners -- Wrote up a part of my report rode back to town at 4 -- got a lunch at home -- packed my valise, & left -- met my children coming from theater matinee -- Kissed them good bye & took the excursion train for Va at 5:10 -- Arrived at 8:10 -- Went to room & finished report, & got it to Enterprise office at 10 -- Wrote out ad for the Wieland Lager bee, book it in, read proof report -- Home -- Bed at 3 --

Clear & very pleasant -- Below 70 and quite a contrast to Reno weather, At home most of the day, fixing, wahing, and mending up -- Evening down town short time Bed at 11 -- My regular hay fever catarrh has troubled me but very little thus far, and is not liable to now, as its time is getting past -- At its worst it has generally begun to pass away with the advent of October -- My nose has been a little plugged and my eyes a little sore -- "only this & nothing more." Have used 2 bottles of Santa Abie and the California "Cat-R Cure" -- also 12 grains of quinine --

Clear warm & pleasant -- 76° -- Had bad diarrhoea & staid at home most of the day -- evening down town awhile -- home -- read, etc -- Bed at 2 -- The Ormsby County District Fair commenced today, for a week -- at Carson -- Same style as the State Fair --

Same -- PM about town -- Evening ditto -- Bed at 1

Cloudy but pleasant -- & cooler -- Below 70° -- PM about town -- Evening attended theater -- The Osbourne & Stockwell company from the Alcazar Theater, played -- The play was "Shadows of a Great City" -- Good house -- Bed at 12

Cloudy & cooler -- 55° -- PM about town -- Evening at theater -- "The Golden Giant" -- by same company, who are to play rest of week -- About 1/3 of a house -- Good play and good acting -- Snow storm about 11 oclock -- Bed at 12 -- not snowing, but the ground white with the first snow of the season --

Clear, cool & pleasant -- Morning, ground white with about 1/2 inch of snow -- melted off long before noon -- About town -- Evening, theater -- Play "Ranch 10" -- Bed at 1 --

Same -- Went to Carson on morning train -- "goodby & may God bless you," etc -- Met lots of old acquaintances -- At noon 4 passenger coaches arrived with 250 passengers from Reno to respond to Carson for her attendance at the State Fair -- I rode on carriage to the Fair grounds, a mile or two north of town -- John Sweeney's place -- Very good attendance & very good time -- Home on evening train -- Room 7 -- at 9 went to theater -- Play "Shadows" etc same as 1st night -- Bed 1 -- Slim house -- Fair about same as Reno in stock showing etc -- only less of it -- races etc -- Didnt

Cloudy & cool -- PM worked at "fretting" my big old Jim Henley banjo -- Evening down town -- Met Frank Doten, my cousin who has been engaged in the freighting & teaming business for several years between Carson & Bodie & intermediate points -- Here on business, & leaves again from Carson tomorrow -- Bed at 2 --

Clear, warm & pleasant -- At 10 AM footed it to Gold Hill to attend meeting of Centennial Co (trustees & stockholders) by reason of letter rec'd from Supt Richards

telling about big strike of water, flooding the mine -- Decided to tell him to keep the pump running for a few days, or till could definitely ascertain if it is a big pocket or water or a permanent flow -- Footed back at 3 PM -- Dined at Hamb's G Hill -- Evening about town -- Bed at 1 --

Clear & cool -- ((phrase erased)) PM wrote & mailed letter to Sam Jones, San Francisco, striking him for $350 or $500 -- Evening at theater -- same company -- "Round the World in 80 days" -- Good house -- Bed at 1 --

Same -- cooler -- 54 -- PM I finished the fretting of my old Jim Henley banjo -- Evening down town -- Bed at 1 -- Met Joe Grigg's ("Wildcat Joe") today -- He is about my age and is keeper or watchman at the Wells Fargo mine 2 miles north of this city -- Quite an original character -- Never made his personal acquaintance before, although he is an old timer on the Comstock -- Engineer by profession, and

the first employed by the Savage Co, He wanted to know how to telegraph to Reno on Sunday inquiring about George W Nelson, another old Weshoeite, 61 yrs old -- I showed and helped him out --

Clear, cool & pleasant -- 55 -- About town -- Met Wildcat Joe & he showed me telegram stating that his friend Geo W Nelson died last night -- chronic liver & kidneys -- at Washoe County hospital, Reno, Old timer, very well know throughout this section -- Evening I wrote a nice send off for him and gave it to the Enterprise -- Bed at 1 --
