In from Bodie, by V & T RR -- Same old Jim -- Born Aug 4, 1823 -- On his way to S.F. to be treated for a chronic rupture -- Also met Sam L Jones, down from Gold Hill, bound for S.F. Bed 12 -- freezing hard -- Recd Wells Herald with No 9 published in it -- The football team from the Belmont University, Cal, came on train at 1 PM and in the PM played against our University team and got beaten badly -- 26 to 0 --

Sunday Nov 13

Same -- AM was with old Jim Townsend, dined with him & Allen Bragg and saw him off for SF on westbound train arriving at 1:30 PM ($6) -- The East bound train arrived at same time -- Trains & mails still very irregular & unreliable on acc't of tunnel blockade -- no freight cars can pass as yet, but expect to tomorrow. The Belmont football team went back home on PM train -- our boys saw them off in good shape --

Monday Nov 14

Same -- Blockade raised early this morning, trains passing through tunnel -- About 11 AM 2 full public trains from the west & 2 from the east met & passed at this depot, making with the V & T, five full trains -- never occurred before in Reno -- All right now -- Bed 11 -- Another full train, passengers, mail etc, from Cal passed at 9:30 PM --

170 -- Trains on Time Again -- Herald No 10 -- Sadler Elected Fred Sharon -- G Record, No 7 -- Sam's Poetry -- Cuba Libre Dr JU Hall Dead -- Ziemetz' Murderer Suicides -- Werrin Snow Snow Snow Snow -- Dr Hall Dead

Tuesday Nov 15

Same -- Trains about on time as before the blockade -- PM wrote No 10, 4 pages (cash called for) & sent it to the Wells Herald 9 PM train & regular -- Bed 11 -- Returns about all in indicate Sadler elected sure --

Wednesday Nov 16

Cloudy -- Variable -- Evening I met Fred Sharon -- Been on a visit to the Comstock & returning home with his wife, to San F, their home -- on morning train -- Bed 11 --

Thursday Nov 17

Same -- fine -- Evening & night I wrote 5 page letter, No 7, to Gardnerville Record -- inclosed note calling for coin -- Bed 3:30 -- In the Student Record of the present month, my son Sam has quite a piece of poetry, seven verses, entitled Cuba Libre -- His first attempt -- that I have ever seen, and a pretty good one, savoring considerably of the poetically practical --

Friday Nov 18

Same, blustering & cooler -- PM slept couple of hours -- Got my Record No 7 off on morning V & T train -- Bed 10, fine -- Dr JU Hall, formerly of Gold Hill, died at San Jose, Cal, last Sunday, the 13th, aged 75 yrs -- native of Kentucky --

AM light, steady rain -- PM it broke off clear toward evening -- very muddy --

plenty of snow fell in all the mountains around -- all white -- No 10 came in Herald -- 2 columns -- Evening light snowstorm whitened the town -- Bed 11 [clipping]

Senator Jones -- Wells Herald -- No 11 (& pay) 1898 -- Corbett-Sharkey Fight in New York

Cloudy, variable, freezing in shade all day -- very wintry -- PM wrote 2 page letter to Senator Jones, Palace Hotel, S.F. & sent it by late evening train --

Monday Nov 21

Same -- thawy -- threatening storm --

Tuesday Nov 22

Clear & pleasant -- PM wrote No 11 4 pages & sent it in evening train at 9 to the Wells Herald (pay called for) -- Corbett-Sharkey fight in NY this evening -- Henry Riter had the dispatches at his saloon and big crowd heard the bulletins read aloud as fast as received. Quite an excitement in SF and all over the country regarding it -- Dispatch has said the Lenox Athletic club rooms densely crowded to see the fight -- 20 rounds contest -- catch weights, for championship of world. Sharkey knocked Corbett down in second round -- All other rounds lively fighting & about even -- no blood & little hurt -- Ninth round close

quick fighting and clinching. McVey, Corbett's second jumped into the ring to interfere & was hustled out by Chief of Police -- Referee stopped the fight, declared Corbett disqualified by this interference and decided Sharkey winner -- also declared all bets on the contest off -- Decision generally approved -- Corbett made crestfallen.

172 -- Herald -- G Record -- Don't Publish No 7 -- Sadler's Plurality 22 -- The Old Comstock Whistles Again -- Baldwin Hotel Burned Wintry Thanksgiving -- Record No 8 -- Shooting Stars Geo R Vardy $5 -- We Beat Stanford 22 to 0 !!!

AM cloudy & very frosty -- old -- PM variable & warmer -- Sent short supplementary note of the fight to Herald -- Record came with my letter No 7 not in it (?) The famous Baldwin Hotel, 6 stories, cost $3,000,000 was all destroyed by fire very early this morning, commencing at 8:25 -- 8 lives lost -- The steam whistle of the C & C shaft, Va, blew at noon today for 1st time in several months, renewed old time sound for the Comstock -- The Gazette this evening figures Sadlers plurality in State at 22, from semi-official tabular statements from all quarters -- & says a recount of entire State has to be made for Governor -- 12 votes for McMillan, gained by re-count will elect him --

Variable -- wintry -- lively snowstorm at 8 AM whitened the ground -- Chilly Thanksgiving Day -- We had roast pork and cranberry sauce for dinner --

The Second Eleven of the Stanford University, Cal, came this morning and our University team beat them foot ball this PM, 22 to 0 -- The Nevada

State Journal, Reno, this morning in a neat half column editorial announcing "change in ownership" ED Kelley retiring, owing to his new business, (elected State Surveyor General) and his partner, Judge Wm Webster becoming full sole proprietor, by purchase of Kelley's interest -- The business of the concern will hereafter be conducted under the name of William Webster & Son --
