Heavy white frost this morning, much damage to potato tops and similar vegetation but none to fruit -- Busy most of day at room, evolving and constructing a new and original style of catheter case -- Bed 11 --
Rain & Hail Thunder Storm -- Masonic Grand Lodge -- 1901 Hettie Humphries Dead President McKinley Squarely Refuses Third Term
Wednesday June 12
Cloudy, cool variable -- PM and evening some good showers of hail and rain with strong thunder and lightning -- laid the dust good -- Bed 12 -- clear -- The Grand Lodge of Masons closed 3 days session here this evening -- Full attendance from all parts of the State -- Major J H Dennis was up from Reno attending -- He is looking first rate -- Miss Hettie Humphreys died here this morning, aged 34 years -- She was born in Dayton, Nevada, where her father died when she was but 10 yrs old -- She taught school there as soon as able, for two years, was 2 years telegrapher at the V & T RR station -- Franktown, and since then has been telegrapher here for the Western Union Tel Co -- She was a weakly, hard working little woman, suffering much from illness and bodily pain, incapacitating her from work for several months past, ending with her death -- everybody who knew her was her friend --

In response to statements published that he desires to be elected President for a third term, and that his present actions and policy are shaped to that end, McKinley comes out squarefooted in speech and print stating that such is not the case; that he does not desire it and wouldn't take the nomination if it were offered to him and he was dead sure of being elected -- won't have it no how --

Big white frost this morning -- clear cool & pleasant -- At morning train I met Harry Branch, one of my old Gold Hill, Cornish miner friends -- Haven't seen him for several years -- I put a nice little item about him in the Carson News this PM -- Big crowd, over 200 Knights of Pythiss came today from all parts of the State attending Grand Lodge -- Great time this evening initiating 2 candidates in the third degree -- Bed 12 -- Mailed a News to Harry Branch, Bodie, where he goes after visiting the Comstock -- Also mailed a copy of my Seattle Times to Sam Longabaugh, Washoe City.

Same -- Light frost this morning -- Frosts have not hurt fruit and vegetables much and getting too late now for further damage -- The K of P Grand Lodge got through today and went home -- PM I attended at Opera House the gra-

duating exercises of Carson Business College, Professors Warfel & Blanchet and the closing of their connection with the institution, as they concluded that after three years successful run that they will accept of a more lucrative proposition to run a similar college in El Paso Texas -- The best number rendered in this PM exhibit to me was Miss Clara Spooner's recitation -- She is one of the best elocutionists I ever listened to, but
Johnny Bartholomew's Dash -- 1901 Miss Clara Spooner -- College Ball at Opera House
her recitation got me -- It was entitled Johnny Bartholomew & about this: The morning passenger train over the V & T, about 30 years ago was coming up at its usual lively rate -- locomotive Reno -- engineer, Johnny Bartholomew -- As he came around the curve below the American Falt Tunnel, he saw it all on fire inside -- He had neither time nor space, nor air brakes to stop except in the midst of that 600 foot tunnel -- had to think quick -- threw the throttle wide open and just rushed through hell -- Stopped and he and the train hands swept the piles of fire brands off the roofs of the cars. I wrote it up in the Gold Hill News -- Made a poetical sketch also entitled "Johnny Bartholomew's Dash", which was extensively copied -- The exercises this PM were after the usual style, readings, recitations, music, singing, etc -- and very fully attended -- At conclusion, I met Miss Spooner, introduced myself and had a pleasant little complimentary chat with her -- Old

Valley rancher told me the other day that alfalfa is at its best when 4 yrs old -- after that the roots are grown big and hollow and the plant deteriorates -- gets wormy, etc -- can then be improved by cutting up or disentegration with a disc harrow, which splits up the roots, but at 8 years it is best to plow it good, turning it all under and sowing afresh --
Saturday June 15
Clear & pleasant -- no frost this morning -- Rose at 7 -- wrote page letter to the Gardnerville Record and mailed it at 10 (see 17th) -- Sent page letter to wife by evening train -- Bed 12 --
Sunday June 16
Same -- The chief event of today was base ball contest down at the race track -- "Wildcat" nine Carson beating Gardnerville kid "Coyotes" nine 17 to 4 --
Monday June 17
Variable, warmer -- Morning I re-wrote and improved my Saturday's letter to the G Record and sent it by morning stage to Gardnerville -- Sent also a page letter to wife by evening mail -- Bunker Hill Day -- No special

Wednesday June 19
Same -- PM heavy thunder showers all around and a very eligible one hit Carson good for about an hour -- made very muddy streets -- Got letter from wife -- Odd jobs -- Bed at 11:30 -- clear. Butler left for San Francisco tonight --
Thursday June 20
Partially cloudy, but very warm -- 86° like yesterday -- Finished making a new pocket document case, 8 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 1 inch -- Also finished up a catheter case, 9 x 4 and 3/8 inch -- Rec'd from Will Booth No 1, Vol 1 of his new weekly paper, the Tonopah Bonanza, dated June 15, 1901 -- 4 five column pages -- size of page sheet 13 x 19 inch by Tonopah Pub Co -- W W Booth Manager & Editor -- 9 1/2 columns ads & rest reading matter -- 20 columns all -- Tim Dempsey closes out as barkeep at Arlington tonight and goes as barkeep
