it -- Small storehouse of 200 barrels of coal oil, near the Ophir works -- on E st between Carson & North sts -- building destroyed and some of the oil -- Loss about 2,000 -- At 4 PM Jonah Williams shot in International saloon by Con Collins

in a quarrel over $2 at the gambling table -- [faro?] Ball struck left side & passed around back, & can be felt on opposite side, & will be taken out tomorrow morning -- Dr Kirby and Webber, attended him -- Bed at 2 --

Same -- Bed at 4:30 -- Ran with Steve Gilles awhile in saloons, after got through in office -- Like a dam fool -- But no hard drinking -- mostly talking --

Thursday Aug* 3

Same -- This evening I commenced telegraphing for the Cal Associated Press, from here, for pay -- $10 per month -- getting my dispatch off at 12 oclock -- 2 items, 47 and 25 words respectively -- About Brophy being nerly killed by accident in the Douglass mill, Dayton, yesterday, and a fire in McGurn's North C st store this AM -- PM attended examination of Con Collin for shooting Jonah Williams -- Bed at 4 --

Friday Aug* 4

Cloudy and cooler -- as usual -- Bed at 3 --

Saturday Aug* 5

The same -- About 75 -- Felt some like fall -- At noon met Abe Hoffman of Hoffman Bros, Austin -- Took him around showed him the theatre etc & took him to my room short time -- Met Mike Farrell, (MJ) on street -- Abe came yesterday morning, and will leave for Bodie tomorrow morning -- Mike & wife & Jennie Peterson, her sister

Big Miners Union Picnic I there

came up from Carson this morning & are stopping at International -- They have been over at McKinney's on the Lake for last 4 or 5 wks -- Will go back to Austin shortly -- Through in office at 1 1/2 -- Bed at 3 -- 62 in my room --

Sunday Aug* 6

Morning cloudy & cool, with a light shower at 4:30 -- I rose at little before 6 -- fixed up & went down to depot -- Big Miners Union Picnic excursion to Treadway's Park, Carson -- left at 7:45 AM -- 6 flats & 4 couches -- I rode in local passenger coach, on my pass, as I had given Jim Townsend my complimentary ticket -- At Gold 2 more flats & a coach joined us, making 13 passenger cars, & having 4 freight

cars on also, made a train of 17 cars in all -- 2 hours to Carson stopping all along to take on more passengers -- Crowds also came in carriages -- Weather cleared

off fine & pleasant & not too hot -- Lots of fun at grounds -- 4 teams target shooting -- The Nevada Rifle Association team got 1st prize -- Gold Hill boys, Junior Hose wond Foreman's race -- Lots of games & sports -- music & dancing -- Train got back to Va at 7:30 When evening train for Reno came along I got aboard -- Through to Reno in no time -- All right at home -- Bed at 10 --

The same -- sent my second dispatch tonight to the Ass. Press or Chronicle, S.F. telling about H K Alexander, carpenters in Eureka Mill, Carson river falling this morning through a hole in the floor 12 ft to floor below, breaking collar bone & nearly killing him -- Bed at 3 -- Down to 69 in my room --

The same -- Nice, cool weather -- Mining day -- & lively as usual -- got letter from wife, also from Mrs. R H Lindsay, Reno, enclosing a very long worded account of her recent trip over in the upper mining belt in the old gold regions of California -- She & family & other gents & ladies & children, were along together -- Big time I guess -- Also got printed list of the tax payers of Lander County, with my name in it, as assessed at $50 valuation on my old log cabin property -- Bed at 3

Saturday Sept 12

The same -- Excursion to Reno, of Masons & others to attend ceremony of laying

State University Corner Stone laid Lilian Smith shooting Wife in Va

corner stone of new State University this PM - under uspices of Masonic fraternity -- Col Shaw went, he being one of the Regents of the University -- Over 150 went from here -- Left at 9:30 on special train & came back at 9:30 -- Wife came along -- I was up to Opera House to see the glass ball shooting of Miss Lilian Smith, the greatest rifle shot in the world -- truly wonderful shooting -- Took wife to room & left her -- Through in office at 12:30 Home at 1 Bed at 1:30 --

Sunday Sept 13 Same -- Warm day -- We rose at 9 -- went to Chanmonds to breakfast -- Took long walk out C st & back northward & up along B st -- Home & staid there till 4 PM & dinner at Chanmond's -- Then to train & at 5:25 we left for Reno together. Found all right there -- Bed at 10 --

Monday Sept 14

Clear & pretty warm -- Breakfast -- Wife & Bessie went with me to train -- Va at 10 -- Work as usual -- Bed at 3 --

Tuesday Sept 15

The same -- Bed at 3 -- I felt today the first nose plugging symptoms of ny annual catarrh -- my eyes have been getting sore for about a week -- Today, the 15th or middle of Sept is the very day for the catarrh or hay fever to start in for my annual dose --

Same -- Wrote & mailed letter to Sam Clemens Mark "Twain" Hartford Conn, & one to James W Paige No 13, Haynes at Harford Conn -- With them I mailed a package to Paige of minerals -- Comstock ore from Hale & Norcross mine, Ruby silver from Austin, Aluminium ore & pieces of the metal, Stephanite from Austin -- Tourmaline and a piece of the [bogus?] "tin ore" from Antelope Valley , [Moore?] County California -- Postage 19 cents -- Bed at 2 --
