Thursday March 23. Canton.

Awoke in Canton to hear
jabbering of many Chinamen
in Sampans surrounding boat.
"Ah Kow," Guide, met us and
we started off in Sedan chairs
born by three coolies. We
would have been lost in two
minutes without a guide.
The streets, too narrow to be
called streets, all look alike
and wind and twist and
turn and go up and down
steps until one is fairly dizzy.
They are often so narrow that
people meeting a chair are
obliged to stand with back to
the wall to allow room for
passing, and more than
one Chinaman had his big
mushroom shaped rain hat
knocked off by a passing chair.
