yesterday. One aircraft was shot down and the people – excited be [by] recent newspaper articles – rushed there, to [strikethrough] have [/strikethrough] get the “airgangsters,” as our paper call allied airmen. One man got out of the plane, shouted in a foreign language, but people went on [strikethrough] recklessly [/strikethrough] regardless. At last the pilot had to draw his revolver to protect himself – he was a German and the aircraft a G. fighter, shot down.

I met a woman this morning, who last Tuesday lost five out of her six children. Damage was much by yesterdays raid, our papers mention over five hundred allied air crafts. Especially Andrássy ut, Hősök tere suffered, but, as people say, under Hősök tere there was a big [strikethrough] petrol [/strikethrough] gasoline tank and this exploded [strikethrough] so heavily, that [/strikethrough] the Milleneum statues and [strikethrough] one [/strikethrough] three of the Museums [strikethrough] there [/strikethrough] around, were severely damaged. At Andrássy ut, - it is stated – in a house were interned American and British subjects. Allegedly hundred and nine* out of them were killed by a hit. *89+3=92 is the exact number.

Mrs Gonczlik, a friend of Erzsike [strikethrough] rang me up [/strikethrough] phoned today, they [strikethrough] are blitzed [/strikethrough] were bombed from their Mátyásföld house. The family survived but they lost everything else. Tercsi néni’s oldest brother, Ernő and his wife committed suicide last Saturday. It is not yet known, whether they will be buried tomorrow or only Wednesday, as there are so many to be buried, it is not sure, their turn will come.*

Here is our Joe [strikethrough] Joe's recent photo. [/strikethrough] He is looking a bit mad, though. Others will follow, as Elko promises me. [[Photograph]] [Black and white photograph of a dog]

July 4, Tuesday. This is a national holyday for you and a holyday for us from raids, as it is [strikethrough] heavily [/strikethrough] raining.

From today on all cars, which had “E”, are stopped. Only the “Ü” cars will get [strikethrough] petrol [/strikethrough] gas in the future. [strikethrough] They [/strikethrough] There are not so many.

The evening. After my work I was to see Pravdáné, begged them to go to the countryside for two weeks. They are close to the Easternstation and living there may prove rather unhealthy these days. Béla was there too I shook hands with him and told him, it is good he did not do as his plan was, else I would not shake hands with him.

The afternoon I had to see the Szerdahelyis, they did not find me at home Sunday. Ilonka was at home, Bandi, his wife and baby down at Halas. She gave me the announcement card of the little one, he was born about the end of April. Ferkó came home later, he was at home for three weeks sickleave with an [strikethrough] bad [/strikethrough] eczema. I am sick, coming from them. He told me cheerfully how he used to go with his friends to

various people’s [strikethrough] flats [/strikethrough] houses and beat them regularly. As it is almost like Dénes [strikethrough] is [/strikethrough] in thinking, I hope, the latter is not so cruel, I can not have other explanation to this phenomenon, as when they were children, people, their parents were so desperately poor, they did not give them proper education. This generation, growing up felt himself being bested by better educated and more cultured strata: this is their reaction to the fact. All other people, who have more culture and more conscience, should go to the devil. He told me too, that the fighting in Italy and on the eastern frontline is just make believe. The Germans can throw out all Americans from Europe the moment they really whish.

Else, he feels very patriotic, he says 156 military persons were killed only in Bpest on the 19th March by the [strikethrough] invading [/strikethrough] occupying troups. From the last raid he has the information, that not 500 but 1200 aircrafts were over the country.

[Strikethrough] Funny. [/strikethrough] We know only about fighting in Normandy. Today’s G. commentators mention fighting in Flanders. – Germany denies the rumours about peace [strikethrough] tentatives [/strikethrough] feelers in Seville, with Salazar, as intermediary. But the Finnish premier, Linkomies announced yesterday, Finland has the moral obligation to lay down weapons in accord with Germany. This must be a mistake as until now there was never talk about laying down the weapons, in the country, it was stated, that we have to fight until final victory.

July 5. Wednesday.

The morning I had to [strikethrough] fetch [/strikethrough] get a book from Klári’s (M) friend, but in vain. Just the same with Elko’s sister in law, Frances. But I don’t mind having seen her, she is a good girl and little Elko is about the age of Barbara. At Rami no cigarettes.
