H.C.M. Reports: Salt Lake, Utah, Wednesday, November 18, 1915.

This morning I was instructed to go to the vicinity of the I.W.W. Hall on S. West Temple St. with Opt. 6 and there take under surveillance some one of the I.W.W. members whom Opt. 6 would designate to me. On arrival there, Opt. 6 informed me that neither Ritter or Child were then in the hall but later he designated to me Child and Rowan, the Secretary of the local I.W.W.

About 3:00 P.M. Rowan came out of the I.W.W. hall and went east on 1st South to second-hand furniture and repair shop between 2nd and 3rd East Sts. In a few minutes he came out with Child, who runs this place, and they went to a place on 2nd East at the rear of house No. 234 S. 2nd East. Coming out with some other men about 10 minutes later, Rowan and Child went to the vicinity of 2nd South and State Sts. As Opt. 158 and 129 were then in the vicinity, I returned to the vicinity of the I.W.W. hall, so as to pick any of these men up there, in case the other operatives lost them. I noticed there were quite a number of men going in and out of the headquarters, most of whom would go a block or two and then return.

About 8:00 P.M. Rowan and about 7 or 8 men left the Hall and went to 2nd South and Commercial Sts. where the I.W.W. was holding a street meeting. Rowan stood in the crowd for a while and when he started to leave, I lost sight of him. About 9:30 P.M. I noticed Rowan leave the hall with two men and go south on W. Temple. Opt. 129 had them under surveillance.

About 11:30 P.M. the lights were put out in the hall.

I remained in a room in the vicinity during the remainder of the night watching the hall, but nothing transpired. I discontinued at 7:00 A.M.

No. 158 Reports: Salt Lake, Utah, Thursday, November 18, 1915.

This morning at 10:30 I went to the vicinity of the I.W.W. Headquarters on S. West Temple St., where I met Opt. 6 who was to designate George Child to me, and whom I was to keep under surveillance. Opt. 6 informed me that Child was not then at the hall, and we waited for him to make his appearance. Later we learned that Child had a small furniture repair shop at 215 E. 1st South St. and about 2:00 P.M. we went to that vicinity, where after interviewing Child, Opt. 6 designated him to me. I then secured a room in the vicinity as Child was at work and liable to be there during the afternoon. From the room I had full view of the shop and during the afternoon the following transpired: At 2:40 P.M. the mail man delivered mail. At 3:00 P.M. a man answering the following description:

Height 5 ft. 7, smooth face, wore black hat and black overcoat entered the shop. In about 5 minutes, he came out and left.

At 3:10 P.M. two women came to the place, one entering and the other waiting outside. They left in about three minutes.

At 3:35 P.M. Sec. Rowan came to the shop and after a few minutes came out with Child and they hurried to a small house located on Second East in the rear across the street from the Woodruff Apts., where they went in, and a in a few minutes came out with two more men. One of the men got in an auto 3486-U[T3?] and went east on Second South St. The other three went west on Second South to Sorensen's jewelry store. In about four minutes they came out and tried to catch a Sugar House car but missed it. Then they waited for the next one, a 15th East car, and boarded same, while I was telephoning the office. I took the next car and went to the State Penitentiary, but did not locate them in the vicinity, and they must have gone inside. After waiting in the vicinity for awhile I returned to town, arriving at 5:15 P.M. I then reported at the office, and later left with Opt. 6 to endeavor to locate Child.

About 7:30 P.M. we picked Child up as he came out of the I.W.W. headquarters on W. Temple St. He went south on W. Temple and apparently entered the Realty rooming house, or the undertaking parlor at 227 S. West Temple St., next door. After a few minutes, he came back to 1st South and West Temple where he met a lady whom he accompanied to 2nd South and Main. Here they met a party of three women and four men. After this party boarded a car, Child with one of the men returned to 1st South and West Temple Sts., where they stood across from the I.W.W. headquarters talking for about 15 minutes. They then went to E. 2nd South, where the I.W.W.'s were holding a meeting, and here Child left the man and went into Sorensen's jewelry store for about 15 minutes. He then came out with Mr. Rowan and another man and the three of them went to the

I.W.W. Hall. At 9:20 P.M. Mr. Soren X. Christensen entered the hall and a few minutes later Child and a small man went to the store next to the Realty rooming house on S. West Temple, (This I later learned was an undertaking parlor). About five minutes later they returned to the hall. About 9:45 P.M. Child came out with a small man from the hall, the same man as mentioned above, and they went to Main, to 2nd South and over to State to the Opera Bar. They were in the bar about 5 minutes, then went north on State St. The man Child was with caught a Murray car, and Child went east on 1st South to the alley east of Barth's rooming house.

We remained in the vicinity until about 11:15 P.M. and as Child did not come out, we returned to the vicinity of the I.W.W. Hall. After remaining there about 20 minutes, we went to 2nd South St. and to the vicinity of Sorensen's store, which we found closed and dark. At 12:00 o'clock midnight we discontinued.

No. 6 Reports:

Salt Lake, Utah, Friday, November 19, 1915.

This evening I was instructed to get in touch with Opt. 158 and instruct him to be on the lookout for McDonald a chauffeur, who is also a member of the I.W.W.

I located Opt. 158 in the vicinity of the I.W.W. hall and learned that Child the man he was following was in the hall at the time. Accordingly I took up the surveillance of Child, so that in the event Opt. 158 found McDonald, he could then take him under surveillance.

About 8:30 P.M. Child, Rowan and another man left the hall, the third man being rather tall, slim build, somewhat stooped, thin face, sharp nose. The three of them then went to the Western Union Office, where they remained about 20 minutes. They then left and Child and Rowan went down main, while the other fellow left them. They went into Leon's Bar on Main St. for a few minutes, then went over second South St. to Commercial St. to a saloon near the corner of Second South and Commercial. Here they remained some little time, leaving about 10:20 P.M. They then walked slowly over Second South St. to State, where they talked awhile, then returned towards Main on Second South. They met a man in front of the Continental National Bank with whom they talked for about half an hour. In fact they met several people along Second South, who would stop and talk with them, most of them for only a few minutes. They then returned to the saloon on Commercial St., which is Kuhn's I believe and remained about 15 minutes. They then came out with another man and walked to Second South and State, where they talked for some little time, then proceeded east on 2nd South to 2nd East. Here they stood on the corner for East and Child and the other man going north on 2nd East to 1st South and east to the alley next to the Barth rooming house near the middle of the block on the north side, between 2nd and 3rd east Sts.

I then discontinued it being about 11:30 P.M. We saw nothing of McDonald tonight.
