NORTHERN LAND AGENCY J.G.R. BANER, MANAGER
IRONWOOD, MICH., Aug. 4th 1914.
To HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR OF UTA.
SIR:-
Chance and fate and circunstances Write biografie's with lances Often, very often here. They create and we are creatures, And, if right I judge your features, YOU explored THAT human sphere.
You in part are fate-commanding Where today we see you standing: Can dictate the law of chance; You can stem the mental fury Of attorneys and jury With gubernatorial lance.
In your charming Salt Lake City One at least will need your pity, Need your strong, protecting shield; And I hope, WE hope you shield him Tenderly, till Right will yield him Freedom's bloom on honor's field.
Poets may be cranks, erratics, May be dreamers - yes, fanatics, But their hearts were ALWAYS warm! How, then, could JOHN HILLSTROM ever Slay? Ah, Excellency, never! So, protect him with your arm.
Very respectfully yours
JOHAN G.R. BANER.

I have seen nothing more about the case of Joe Hill since he was sentenced except that an effort was being made to obtain another trial. Please let me entreat you if it in your power, to see that he is not shot without a new trial in which every possible opportunity is given to produce evidence that can without doubt be obtained, that he is innocent of that which is charged against him.
With earnest entreaties in his behalf
Yours respectfully,
Jennie F. Brown Acton, Mass

Portland, January 22nd, 1915.
To His Excellency, Governor Wm. Spry, Salt Lake City, Utah
Dear Governor:--
At a regular meeting of Local Union 125, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, comprising 96% of the electrical workers of Portland and vicinity, I was instructed to write you a letter of protest in the case of Joseph Hill.
This man, we understand, is to be executed in Utah at an early date. We understand he was convicted on circumstantial evidence alone and also that he has been an agitator for improvement of conditions of the working people. This we believe has entered largely into his case, and we would like to call your attention to the fact that all progress that has been made in the world up to the present time has been the result of agitation, as have practically all of the good laws we have in the State of Oregon, and we feel sure that if Joseph Hill is not granted a new trial and the will of the people of Utah is carried out that it will be a record on the statutes of Utah that will be hard to eradicate in the times to come, and we trust that you will use your good and great office of Governor of the State of Utah to prevent anything of this nature being carried out.
With sincere wishes, we are,
Respectfully,
LOCAL UNION 125,
Fred L. Bourne Business Agent.
