a fair trial, I have heard that the jurors were not selected in the usual way and that the defendant was practically without counsel when he was on trial for his life, that no motive was shown for the crime of which he was convicted and that the conviction was found upon the flimsiest kind of circumstantial evidence.

Therefore, believing these to be the facts, I the undersigned demand that the death sentence in the case of Joseph Hillstrom be set aside and clemency extended.

Governer State of Utah Your honor Sir

I feel as I have duty to be attended immediately to help and save our beloved Brother Joe Hill. I consider the perseacution of Joe Hill is a clear case of infamous injustice, we farmers have been doing some reading and thinking of late, So dont think if they excute Joe Hill that they will kill the cause he so loyally stood by and fought for. If Joe Hill must be shot remember the working class [crossed out: working class] will gain by it 100 folds. I consider the execution of Joe Hill to be rank murder, a blow at liberty and a crime against the working class of the United States.

Very Truly Yours, A reader of the Appeal to Reason and a farmer.

Govenor of Utah:

Dear Sir: I see in the news paper that one Joe Hill is sentenced to be executed on Oct 1, 1915 and that he was railroaded without a fair trial, and an inflamed sentiment against him. I disbelieve in all capital punishment even when they have a fair trial. Please make a thorough investigation of this case, and at least commute to life imprisonment. Give him a chance to have a fair trial. Yours for Justice. I am not a socialist] [underlined] C.S. Brown
