My dear Sir:- This letter is an expression of appreciation of your cordial communication of November 19th, conveying your approval of my action in connection with the notorious Hillstrom case.

It is a source of much gratification to me to hear from the law-abiding people of this country and to learn that I have their approval of doing what I regarded as my plain and simple duty.

I have taken the liberty of showing your let- ter to the members of the State Board of Pardons who acted with me in connection with this case, and they join with me in this expression of thanks.

Harvey Cluff Attorney and Counsellor at Law Room 1, Knight Block Provo, Utah

Nov. 19th, 1915.

Governer William Spry. Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dear Governer,--

Permit me to congratulate you upon the stand you have taken in the Hillstrom case. In your reply to an UNWORTHY PRESIDENT you have maintained the dignity of Utah and yet quite sevierly rebuked him.

Numerious expressions of praise for you and the stand you have taken in this matter can be heard on the streets of Provo this morning, and you may rest assured that the law abiding Citizens of the State are with you. One gentleman from New York was heard to remark that certainly no selfrespecting Citizen of Utah could ever be guilty of voting for Wilson again.

With kind regards, I am,

Yours truly, Harvey Cluff

January 5, 1916.

Mr. Harvey Cluff,

Provo, Utah.

My dear Mr. Cluff:--

So many matters have engaged my attention for the past six weeks that until now, it has been impossible to look after the accumulation of mail. I trust you will accept this tardy acknowledgment of your letter of November 19th, conveying your approval of my action in the Hillstrom case.

I want you to know that I thoroughly appreciated your letter and have shown the same to the members of the State Board of Pardons who join me in this letter of thanks.

The warm expression of the good citizens of this state, commendatory of our stand, has been a source of great satisfaction and I am sure that the vigorous, and outspoken disapproval of the citizens against those who would accomplish their ends through threats and intimidations, have had a tendency to curb the lawless element from attempting acts of violence.

With kind personal regards and the compliments of the season, I am

Cordially yours,

Governor.
