404 Beck Building,
Portland, Oregon,
August 4, 1914,

Governor William Spry
Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dear Sir:

As one who loves liberty, humanity and
fair-play I protest most strenously against the
methods used in prosecuting and convicting a
brother worker, Joe Hill, who now languishes in
prison, the victim of ignorance, predjudice, in-
justice and inhumanity. A wave of indignation
and resentment is sweeping this country at the high-
handed methods used by those in authority against
innocent victims. Justice no longer reigns in our
courts, and it is possible at any time to convict
a propertyless man on the flimsiest evidence.

Again I protest and request that a new
trial be granted this man.

Yours for decency,
Harriet T. Chevin [signature]
