Ronceverte, W. Va., Nov. 8th, 1915.

To His Excellency, The Governor:-- Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dear Sir:--

It seems to me that the case of Joseph Hillstrom should demand your intervention, as this man has never been proven guilty. And the fact that the law considers all men innocent until they have been proven guilty is the best of reasons why you should see that he is either given a new trial, or turned loose.

As a Citizen of this United States I demand that JUSTICE FULL and FREE be done by this man.

The miscarriage of Justice, and the delays and legal quibbles make a fair trial for the poor man a farce.

Thanking you to act quickly and fairly in this matter,

I am,

Very sincerely yours,

D B Creigh Ronceverte, W. Va.

Chisholm, Minn. November 8 1915

Hon. Wm. Spry Governor of Utah.

Dear Sir:

I take the liberty of writing to you asking for pardon for Joseph Hillstrom, the young swedish poet, being under sentence to die on Nov. 19.

This man is no doubt innocent to the crime for which he has been sentenced to death; and what he has accomplished as a poet, as well as what has been learned about his moral caracter is very contrary to a criminal.

A great number of worthy American citizens are now looking upon you, to act wisely upon this case by removing the death sentence upon Joseph Hillstrom.

Contrary to this you would repeat the words and tactics of Robespierre more than a hundred years ago: "We do not need the men of intelligence".

Yours for humanity James O. Carlson

Honorable William Spry. Governor of the State of Utah Salt Lake City Utah

Dear Sir:--

Kindly permit me to add my name to the list of petitioners in support of Joseph Hillstrom the Labor poet and philosopher, once again.

Now, that the time set for the execution is nearing, the friends of Justice and Fairplay are turning to you, dear sir, again, to plead with you, the executive Chief of the state of Utah, - who now holds the balance of life and death of that man in your hands—to spare that life and save Joseph Hillstrom from certain death.

The feeling is gaining posession here, that this man is suffering for a guilt not his, and a crime not committed by him.

Deeply regretting the murder and with condolence for the berieved family of the Morrisons, we, nevertheless, would see the guilt placed on the head of the real criminal.

But as to Hillstrom, we are more and more convinced that he is not the criminal.

Our country is united in the plea for clemency for Joseph

Hillstrom, and from across the seas a friendly nation raises its voice for the man whom the state of Utah is about to murder.

While being opposed to any kind of murder, whether perpetrated by individuals or by governments the laws, as they stand, should be executed, where the guilt is established.

But where there exists the faintest doubt as to the guilt of the accused, his taking off is willful, deliberate murder. -

And, if in course of time, the true murderer should be uncovered and the innocent Hillstrom in his grave, — who will give him his life back, or restore him to his friends?

Will those citizens who have been instrumental in bringing about his end, then give their life for his? Or will they live with a clear conscience?

Often it does happen that the guilt is, finally, placed where it belongs when it is too late. Shall we not profit by example?

That Joseph Hillstrom is guilty of the crime charged to him has not been proven, the motive for the crime has not been proven, why then should he die?

May we not entreat you, dear Sir, to spare the life of this bird of
