WHEREAS, We are unalterably opposed to the institution of capital punishment for any one convicted of a crime, however heinous; it is barbarous and a relic of the dark ages, and too cruel an attitude for any enlightened society to assume towards its members; and,
WHEREAS, Joseph Hillstrom, an agitator of working-class economics has recently been sentenced to death by the courts of the State of Utah for a crime of which there are serious doubts regarding his guilt; and,
WHEREAS, We believe that there are peculiar circumstances surrounding the case that warrant the executive of the State of Utah intevening in behalf of the accused, and to the end that a gross injustice might be avoided and that an innocent man may not suffer for another's crime.
THEREFORE, We, the undersigned, attach our names to this petition with the hope that the governor of the State of Utah will exercise his executive clemency and commute the sentence of the said Joseph Hillstrom at least until such time can elapse as will afford an opportunity to determine the facts in the case.
