January 10, 1916.

Mr. Sprigg Shackleford,
Gunnison, Colorado.
My dear Sir:—

Please pardon my delay in acknowledging the receipt
of your cordial letter of November 20th, commendatory
of my action in the notorious Hillstrom case. It is
a source of much gratification to me to find that In what
I regarded as my plain and simple duty, I have the loyal
and patriotic support of the American citizens who stand
for the enforcement of law and order and the upholding of
our institution of government.

The campaign which was waged on behalf of this
criminal incited the mailing to me of many thousands of
threatening letters and it is, therefore, a source of
gratification to hear from men like you.

With the compliments of the season, I am
Cordially yours,

Governor.
