18th disappointed to hear that we were obliged a second time to raise the siege of Badajos & retire across the Guadiana every body here was quite desponding at first, saying, that we were going to the lines &c but it is now quite changed we expect every day to move on again
20th We had a skirmish in which we took a number of prisoners; but unfortunately lost 1 Capt. 1 Subt. & 45 of the 11th Lt. Dragoons Capt. Lutyens commanded; who after behaving very gallantly, making some prisoners & cutting thro’ & thro’ the enemy, was taken prisoner with his whole party we know very little about what is going on but what we learn from report which is, the Enemy have retired after throwing in a reinforcement of 5000 men & provisions into Badajos, & that they
