23rd case of the Enemy making a sortie our batteries were thrown up within a few hundred yards of their works, & the covering partied were within 50 yards of our own battery, so that we were exposed to a galling fire from their shells & musketry we often lost from 20 to 30 men of a day without firing a shot
June
10th We left Aranchal & marched to a wood near Solana
13th where we remained till the 13th when we marched to the wood of Albujera where we remained ‘till moonlight when we moved to the wood near Badajos
16th from thence we moved across the Guadiana to a wood near Elvas
17th We moved into Elvas
18th moved into a large wood, where we are hutted, about 2 leagues from Elvas, & 1 league from Campo Mayor I suppose you will have been
