27th position they had an immense force of cavalry they were however driven back with considerable loss the Fusiliers suffered a good deal & lost some Officers, but behaved well we were exposed for a long time to a severe cannonade as well as musquetry; but fortunately did not lose any men it was a fine night, & we had a full view of the whole affair late in the even.g the firing renewed & the enemy got possession of the town of Aldea del Ponte & a small hill after twice being driven out of it which was not in our power to retain this was no part of our position on the contrary, it was in the rear of what the enemy just occupied it must be a fine consolation for the D. of Ragusa (Marmont) that with an army of double superior numbers he should be beaten back by an army which he had obliged to retreat with the utmost precipitation about one o’clock in the morning
