Gentlemen Virginia Cortoman Janry 30th 1767

I am now to thank you for my goods [&] the Justitia & argyle which are long since come safe to hand and tho' their amount greatly exceeds my Expectation at the time they were sent for I confess upon examination but few of the articles appear overated among which are coarse Linens & Woolens, particularly, the cottons and [Roles?] at least & I in the yart too much for I have certainly imported them very good at [illegible] however the extravagancy of the cotton may be in some measure owing to myself because I well remember to have ordered the best

Mrs Carter is much obliged to the Ladies of your house who were so very kind as to put themselves to the trouble of collecting her goods as well as those for her children which she is highly pleas'd with but acknowledges with me that some of the articles are too costly for a planters Wife whose livelyhood depends upon the sweat of his brow

By the arrival of these goods I am fallen considerably in your debt and therefore shall not send you an invoice the present year

I intend Somervell at least frty hhds Tobo this voyage which quantity you will insure for me at eight pounds per hd--this is a deduction that I dislike but what right has a man to risque his comodity who is indebt especially when the premium is low

I have nto yet mention'd to Colo Landon Carter your proposal to the Executors of Colo Chars Carter nor do I think there is any occasion for your uneasiness about it because I was always of opinion that the Executors were your securities for the ballance due you from the Estate, however that all your Doubts may be cleard up to your satisfaction I shall speak to Colo Carter
