...[illegible] money - some 17,000 dolls. The books etc. which you loaned to me were slightly damaged by water, but not enough to affect their scientific value. The trustees have instructed me to pay for all damages to property loaned to us. How soon may we expect to see you here once more?

Very truly yours Wm. Stimpson

Letter from Charles H. Hart to Increase Allen Lapham, December 7th

The Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Philadelphia

Philadelphia December 7th 1866

Hon. I.A. Lapham Milwaukee Wis.

My Dear Sir, It is my pleasure duly to communicate to you that as the annual election of the above named Society held last you evening you were duly elected Honorary Vice President for the State of Wisconsin. At the same meeting the Committee to which the drawing of the gold coin forwarded by you some time since reported that it was a coin of Robert of Geneva, Arch Bishop and Count of Chamblis from 1368 to 1378. If the sketch had been more careful further information undoubtedly could have been given.

Very Respectfully Your old friend Chas. H. [Harsh] Com Sec'y

Wisconsin and the Universal Exposition of 1867,

Citizens of Wisconsin:

State of Wisconsin Executive Department Madison, Dec. 5, 1866

Sometime since in compliance with a request of the General Government , and in accordance with my own earnest desire to have this State honorably represented at the approaching Universal Exposition to be opened at Paris on the first of April next, I issued a formal proclamation, setting forth the claims of said Exposition upon the attention of our people and urging prompt action with a view to insuring the complete success of the enterprise. It is to be regretted, however, that although this present month terminates the period within which contributions will be received at New York, scarcely anything has yet been actually accomplished ; so that, unless the public-spirited and patriotic citizens of the State in every locality give the undertaking immediate support, Wisconsin, whose material and reputational interests are so directly involved, will suffer the reproach of being the only State that would not respond to the call of the country when she sought to make her triumph in the Arts of Peace equal to her glory in Arms. Wisconsin owes a duty to herself as well as to the whole country and must not be behind her sister States in this important matter. The Commission for the State has just been organized and great efforts are now being put forth to insure a fair representation. If these efforts are seconded generously, and without a moment's delay, we may yet save the credit of the State. The Chamber of Commerce of Milwaukee has set a most worthy example by appointing a working committee of prominent gentlemen to co-operate with the Commissioners by making provision for the transportation, reception and shipment of articles and by generous contributions of money to aid in defraying the expenses connected with their exhibition at Paris. It is hoped that all the other cities and towns of the State will set with equal promptness and with a liberality proportionate to their ability and interests they have at stake. The accompanying Appeal of the Commission, presented through its able and efficient President, is cordially commended to all citizens who feel as interest in the prosperity and honor of the Commonwealth.
