(translation)

Munich Sept 1 1871

I. A. Lapham

Dear Sir,

You have had the kindness to remit, through the kind accommodation of the Smithsonian Institute, a copy of your Geological Map of Wisconsin.

I send herewith our best thanks and in return I send you a copy of our First year's Report.

Unfortunately in the catalogue of the Report in which contributions are acknowledged your name was overlooked by my assistant. If you will kindly excuse this mistake, the following report (of the second year) will contain the correction.

With greatest respect. (signed) G. Arendts Secretary

I. A. Lapham Esqr Milwaukee.

Dear Sir

Foreign & civil wars have driven me away from my home in Paris, and now I am again, & this time for good, in the U. S. I am deterimed to become an american citizen, and I have already purchased a new home & ground in Cambridge, close by Harvard College on account of my sons who will be soon in age for college.

I have not yet seen any publication of yours, since I left in 1866. In 1867, during the great exhibition in Paris, I saw one of your

I do not know if you are aware of it, but your name is on the list, since 1867, and is printed as such in the meetings of Paris, London & Copenhagen. I did it because I known your interest in antiquities, and my friends Larteb & [de Morbiller?], having consulted me, for the appointment of corresponding members in the United States, I have given your name.

I suppose your book on [Wiskonsin] is out now; if so, I shall be very glad to have a copy, if you can spare one.

If you come to Boston, please call at my house, I shall be very glad to receive you.

Very truly yours

Dr Lapham

Dear Sir,

I have the pleasure of acknowledging the receipt of your kind letter of Aug. 25th accompanied by a List of names of Lichens (determined by [[Edward Tuckerman|Prof Tuckerman]]) of which you sent me duplicates. It arrived in the midst of my study of them and gratified me to find that I had recognized Several described by him. Among them were some from Wisconsin &c., on which I now report, not finding them in his list. The Superb specimen of Evernia on "tops of nut pine" is E. Valpinia, not "alphinia" as you had written it. I have seen it often, but none so remarkable before.

No 48 [Placodium Elifaus?], with [Licidia atroalba?] Marquette. Lake Superior.

No 49 [Endocurfrin zuferceris?] with [Endoc. frisillum?] Wisconsin.

No 50. Crust of Calicium [chrysopephalum?] [illegible] Blue Mounds

No 51 [Acanospora (Leciden) Schleicheri?]. [[Blue Mounds Wisconsin]]

No 52 [Endocarf-?], but insufficient for accuracy.

No 53 [Parmelia Caperata?]. Blue Mounds Wisc.
