to my premise to you last summer. I hope you will receive them in good order and that they may prove interesting if not useful to you. I believe the girls put into the same bundle something for Harriet.***

This year is to be one [of?] great events in Wisconsin. We have just adopted a State Constitution and the whole system of political machinery is about to be put in motion here. Caucuses and conventions are the order of the day. Next week we shall elect town and city officers throughout the state. In May we elect governor, members of the first state legislature &c. In July the Judges and in November we are to choose a president of the United States: as well as State officers again. Two U.S. Senators are to be appointed. So you see there is a "fine time coming" for the politicians. We may all vote for Henry Dodge for President:: I learn that he is to be a candidate. Whigs must stand back and only look on, they are decidedly below par in Wisconsin.***

The Spring opens here with flattering prospects for a business and improvements in our young city. I have sent for a new edition of my City map for a directory about to be published and will send you one when they reach me, which will be in a few days.

In about three weeks we will be connected by the telegraph wires by way of Cleveland with your city, when, in cases of enough importance, we can communicate without loss of time. The gap between Michigan City and Kalamazoo is all that remains and this is nearly closed up.

Our Library Association have sent $500.00 by Mr. Hale to purchase books, so that we shall have a considerable amount of reading matter here soon.
