Dear Sir-- I have seen Col. D. and asked him to assign to me his contract for the Geological survey, with a view of finishing it up as well as it could be done; with the right to receive all specimens, maps, &c., to be sent to the University. This he declined to do, he considers his part of the survey temporarily suspended and expects to resume it at the end of the war, or whenever his services in that direction are no longer needed. He wrote to Gov. Harvey to this effect. As he has thus by his own confession and his own acts, abandoned the survey, I do not see why the governor may not remove him for neglect, as expressly provided by the law.

The state would make the most in the matter if something like the following could be carried out--Lot Dr. Carr keep Mr. Hale at work until he finishes his map, and a dull report of his explorations. Let Professor Hall finish his report on the Palaeontology by the end of the year and apply the funds he would otherwise pay to Mr. Hale, towards the engraving of plates to accompany his report.
