Reading (near Cincinnati) June 8th, 1836.

Dear Sir,

I have for various reasons neglected too long to answer
your two last letters of Oct 25th 1835 and April 23rd 1836, and to
acknowledge the receipt of some very interesting pamphlets. One
reason was the uncertainty that hung over my future destiny, for
I wanted to inform you of my future place of residence. I am now
on my way to Milwaykee, a new "city" lately founded in Wisconsin
on the west coast of Lake Michigan 80 miles north of Chicago, where
I expect to reside. As the mail passes there twice a week I hope
to hear from my friends occasionally, even at that remote place.

I called on my friend Mr. Buchanan a few days since and found
the package of plants that you sent there for me and also left
there a small package for you. It is very small compared with
yours, but contains numerous specimens of the "curious Poa";
[PLANTAGO] the Ptanlago Cordata, [(?)] the specific name of which is hardly appropriate;
the Trillium nivale &c. As I shall not be able to send
you any more specimens from Ohio I have left catalogues of such
species as I suppose would interest you with my botanical friends
Mr. M.G. Williams of Springfield & Mr. .J.C. Van Cleves of Dayton- They
will probably send you specimens.

It is not certain that I shall find leisure at Milwaukee
to botanize much- but if I should it will afford me pleasure to
send you specimens of the plants of that region. I hope you will
be interested in the plants from the locality for I consider myself
largely in your debt.

Among the specimens I now send you is one of the new Dodecatheon
that I mentioned in a former letter. I am sorry that I
