My Dear Sir

Yours of the 22d ult was recd several days
since but I have been unable to reply before owing to the severe
indisposition of [illegible].

I have marked on the diagram, which I return, the position
of the mounds on my place. The three to the north are simply
str long straight mounds, some 2 or 3 ft high & seem to have been made
with very little regard to points of compass. The one east of my house
is what I call a "man" mound. It has the body, arms (at right angles
or nearly so) & legs of a man but the head or what should be the head
is produced indefinitely, runs off by a gradual taper to nothing.

The tortoise mound is on Jameson’s land very near to the line between
him & Hinckey & is now, I suppose, nearly obliterated by the plough
when I first saw it, there could be no mistake about what it was
intended to represent the body, head, legs & tail were very distinct

The Indian fort I spoke to you about, is situated in Township
21 North, Range 7 East & is on the line between sections 19 & 20, 730
chains from the south corner of those Sections. It is on the bold bluff
bank of what we call Iron Creek. It consists of an oblong or
parallelogram much the longest up & down the Creek. The walls
are about the usual height. There is a regular ditch or [illegible] all
round it & in the ditch & fort trees from 6 to 10 inches are now
growing. From each corner a mo straight mound is thrown up
running off to some distance thus: [ink sketch]
