President Woodrow Wilson,
The White House,
Washington, D. C.

My dear Mr. President:

We are somewhat concerned over the segregation of negroes
in the departments at Washington, and before conmenting unfavor-
bly on it, we should like much to get your own point of view.

We have no right to demand a long letter from yeu but should
appreciate just a word telling us whether you approve of this
segregation, to what extent it is being practiced, and why there
should be such a departure from precedent.
