Sir:

Maj.Michler, Engineer of the 13th L.H. District, writes to this office under date of February 19th, that the keeper at Foulweather light-station wants a box stove and that the keeper at New Dungenness wants a cook stove.

When you visit these stations, you are authorized, if you find the stoves necessary (underlined) to furnish them; but you will exercise your own judgement in the matter rather than consult the wishes of the keepers; as the needs (underlined) of the Service rather than the desire of keepers are to be regarded in such matters.
