I have known John Hopes for about two years, since he has been waiting upon me at my room, and I esteem him to be truly honest, humble & most worthy fellow & eminently deserving of all the favor that can be shewed to a person of his colour & which I am confident he will not abuse. Wm Maxwell

I have known John Hopes for more than thirty years & fully concur with Mr Barret & others in what they say of him. Joseph Mayo
