Sefton Ferrick was born at Hawera on the 22nd February 1922.
He obtained his secondary education at St.Patrick's College,
Silverstream, afterwards continuing by night classes at the
New Plymouth Technical School. He played rugby and cricket for
his College and afterwards tennis for St. Joseph's Club. From
the time of leaving college in 1937, until being mobilised for
service in the 1st Bn. Taranski Regiment early in 1942, he was
employed by Newton King, Limited at New Plymouth.

Flight Sergeant Ferrick was transferred from the Army
on the 19th February 1943, and posted to Omaka for ground duties.
He later served at Gisborne and Palmerston North in a similar
capacity until proceeding to the Initial Training Wing, Rotorua,
on the 26th July. After completing the course there, he was
posted on the 16th October to Ashburton for his elementary
flying training, and then on the 18th December to No. 2 Service
Flying Training School, Woodburne, Blenheim. Here, on the
15th April 1944, he was awarded the flying badge and promoted
to the rank of Sergeant. Later while serving in the Pacific,
he was further promoted to Flight Sergeant on the 15th October
1944. Meantime, on the 30th April 1944, he had commenced
his operational training at
completing this before joining No.22 Squadron at Ardmore
on the 19th June. He embarked for overseas with the Squadron
on the 6th August, serving at Espiritu Santo, Guadalcanal and
Bouganville before returning to New Zealand on the 2nd November.
He again embarked for his second operational tour on the 12th
December, serving at Emirau, until repatriated on the 5th March
1945. After a period of leave, he was posted to Ardmore
for duty and flew Corsair aircraft.
