Joseph A. Benton came to California in 1849, during the gold rush. He first settled in Sacramento, where he founded the First Congregation Church in 1851. He was a pastor for many years as well as a professor of Biblical literature at Pacific Theological Seminary. This collection consists of correspondences and sermons dating from 1848 to 1893. Please note that historical materials in the Gold Rush Collections may include viewpoints and values that are not consistent with the values of the California State Library or the State of California and may be considered offensive. Materials must be viewed in the context of the relevant time period but views are in no way endorsed by the State Library. III Death of C [Christ] rendered his humiliation complete.

Had laid by the glories of the God-head – stooped fronts more

Taken the form & condition of man – born of woman.

The "form of a servant" – one in a low & menial condition –

Finally he was to bow even to death – & that an ignominious.

This was humiliation most com-plete – W'd [Would] not enemies triumph now?

IV Cs [Christ's] death essential to atone [atonement].

"Without shedding of blood no remission of sin." Blood of Bull & Goats can't take away sin" God economizes – C. [Christ] never suffered unless nec. [necessary] = this substance. All pardon effect of Cs death.

Reduced in heaven "washed robes & white"

All blessings traced back to this death.

Exhibited God's purity & justice – as well as love & mercy.

Awful & lovely both here – No greater proof of God's justice or mercy poss. [possible]

Intermingled display of holiness – compassion.

Nought [Nothing] else c'd [could] so have magnified t. [the] ? – not [nothing] else made an adeq [adequate] – expression of hate of sin, love of holiness.

It became him for whom are all things ....to make t. [the] Capt. [Captain] of their salvation perfect thru [through] sufferings.
