Dear Edward,

You're a dear old scout to write
so often. If a had felt you would be able
to receive mail, I would long ago have
written to you. But now that you are on
your way across, I start this letter.
Better late than never.

No news. Was commissioned August 1.
Went home for 5 days leave but returned
here [expected - crossed out] expecting orders to Texas. We
are still here waiting orders. May be here
till the war is over. I believe it will end
at Xmas.

You are very lucky to get over when
so many millions want to go.

All is very pleasant here. I am free at four o'clock
and usually go right into Riverside for a swim in the
Fairmount Tank. That means a great deal to me.

TO THE FOLKS AT HOME: – SAVE FOOD, BUY LIBERTY BONDS AND WAR SAVINGS STAMPS
