Charles E. H. Bates Family Correspondence, 1899-1930 - 2

ReadAboutContentsHelp
This collection documents the experiences of a California family during the early 20th Century, including the First World War. There are 109 letters written by Charles E.H. Bates beginning in his childhood in Alameda, California, and ending in the late 1920s as he begins a career in medicine. Letters sent from California and France while Bates served with the American Expeditionary Forces date from January 1918 through May 1919. There is a larger collection of 784 letters to Bates from his family:  father, mother, and four brothers, as well as friends, including the woman who became his wife. Please note that historical materials in the Bates Collection may include viewpoints and values that are not consistent with the values of the California State Library or the State of California and may be considered offensive. Materials must be viewed in the context of the relevant time period but views are in no way endorsed by the State Library. and Jack & Ella dropped in later. We had to find things for Jos to pack, and got to sleep about 1 am, and up again at 6. Jos caught the train with about 1/2 minute to spare. Lesley writes that he is flying alone about 1 1/2 hours per day. They would not give any Sunday leave, and said flying would be seven days in the week.

We got a letter from Dick. I think the poor old Kid felt blue, over Miss Dowden. He thinks they ought to be heading for the U.S. before long but they dont know anything as to their future movements. Last Saturday Mother and Jos came over in the car, picked me up at noon at the office and we drove down to Palo Alto and spent the afternoon at the Cliftons. The Watermans were there to lunch, so they came home with us via Santa Clara and we stopped for dinner at the Estudillo House in San Leandro. It was no good. Dinner was over so we had a poor Spanish Omelette which took 3/4 of hour to prepare. We have all sworn not to go there any more. I wish you would find out if the Zoo in the Park would take Kinkajou and take care of him. We like the little mischief, but he ties us to house, so that we cannot go away over 24 hours.

There is little news around Alameda circles. I dont know what Mother and I are going to do with ourselves, but she ought to have a change.

Lots of love to you very dear old boy. God bless you always.

Your loving father HLA Bates

I have not written you this week but wrote to Nor Dick & Les. Jocelyn left on Tuesday for Rice fields just heard from him. The heat is great [underlined] 114° when he got there which is terrific but next day a thunderstorm came in which also [underlined] was terrific as he & young Linderman both thought they were struck

[Written vertically on left margin:] I brought Grandma Daniels a nice bunch of flowers yesterday I thought it was her birthday but was mistaken it was on the 11th June.

altogether: Two grains at a time with citrict [citric] of magnesia next a.m. early. We rather disliked such a large dose of calomel but Dr Eaves says [underlined] it is all right –

He said also farm work if not too much heavy [underlined] work would be OK for Jocelyn – but something I fear it is not – too much temptation to over strain at times I fear – sometimes I wonder is Dr. E. old enough to have the necessary wisdom & experience

to know how to advise general treatment in such cases – No doubt as a surgeon he is excellent [underlined] I think he is but sometimes I wonder if he is careful enough [underlined] in Jocelyns case –

He was very nice & gave us an affadavit to file with J's questionnaire stating that he should not be drafted [underlined] under a year at least –

I went to see dear old Dr Tisdale's daughter Mrs James yesterday. I read a little of your letter
